You are correct. I was thinking back before formation of Homeland Security they were part of DOT. Thank you for correcting my error.

They’re under DHS, but they should be under DoD, as they’re considered armed forces.

Done it before. Moved two states away with nothing but a promise of a job. Didn’t have kids at the time, but still. Plenty of jobs offer relocation expenses.

I’m not saying, nor do I think, that any job is unimportant. I’m just saying that if you work for the government, and are considered essential, then you should have a plan in place for shutdowns. They’re going to happen. Should they happen? No. It’s just squabbling between our shitpot overlords in Congress. But as long as we have this fricked up world we live in they are a reality. Saving is hard, especially paycheck to paycheck, but not impossible.
Also...about your daughters birthday. I don’t know where you live, but here in Jackson, I’ve heard some of the trampoline parks, etc are letting government workers affected by the shutdown in free. Don’t know whether it applies to parties, but it could help.

I have a work project that has been held up.
They were theee weeks behind before the shutdown. Might get it done by July.

Lots of people in DC are affected, including non-federal employees.
For example, Uber drivers are being hit pretty hard here. The restaurant and tourism industries generally are.
The effects definitely range pretty widely and beyond just federal employees. That said, most of government is still open so that helps.
