We're talking in the US, and the KKK is a pretty prominent non-governmental group.

Fixed it for you. The KKK hadn't been relevant in decades.

The KKK is a pretty large gang, and it's filled with Republicans. Oops?

Both, if you consider Bannon and Miller and Gorka government actors -and- white supremacists.

It was filled with Democrats last weekend? Weird how you think those guys are Democrats, they'd be pretty pissed at you for it.

And we can all acknowledge that Democrats used to be racist as frick, but Republicans gladly took that mantle from them after the Civil Rights Act. The parties aren't the same as they were 50-60 years ago.

5-8k members per the SPLC

Civil Rights Act

Civil Rights Act was an abomination of a law, Congress clearly violating free speech with respect to private business and their hiring practices

David Duke and the Nazis marching this weekend in Charlottesville would disagree with you. They also murdered someone just this weekend in a terroristic act. That's not the first time they or other right wing extremists have done that in recent memory.

Well, duh. Don't see a lot of your fellow Republicans holding tiki-torch vigils in Singapore, do we? (though now that Tiki Inc. has disavowed them, I wonder if Breitbart can make some White Power Torches for the next one...)

the Southern Poverty Law Center estimates a KKK membership of 5-8k

LINK

quote:

Since the 1970s the Klan has been greatly weakened by internal conflicts, court cases, a seemingly endless series of splits and government infiltration. While some factions have preserved an openly racist and militant approach, others have tried to enter the mainstream, cloaking their racism as mere "civil rights for whites." Today, the Center estimates that there are between 5,000 and 8,000 Klan members, split among dozens of different - and often warring - organizations that use the Klan name.

well in terms of recent violence, the left has been the instigator far more often than the right

if we go back before the CRA, it gets too hard to label left/right (kind of like how the DEMs switched)

so, in modern US history i'll say that if we're talking solely about political groups, the right has more violence. primarily it's skewed largely by the OKC bombing but that does count.

i'm not a fan of right-wing or left-wing authoritarian groups, so i have no issues saying that

i'm anti-authoritarian, whether it's from the left or the right. i hate Nazis and Communists b/c they're the same thing

Nope. But once a group is flying Nazi flags alongside the American flag, they should immediately lose all legitimacy and support. If I saw liberal groups flying Soviet flags, I wouldn't defend any of their actions. I'd be pissed that extremist assholes were on my side of the fence on any issue.

Not going to be held.

quote:

Saying they’re concerned about student safety, Texas A&M University leaders announced Monday that they have canceled a planned white nationalist rally on campus.

The school said in a statement that it made the decision after consulting law enforcement and "considerable study." The event won’t happen because of "concerns about the safety of its students, faculty, staff and the public,” the school said.

the ACLU is probably on the way to sue

that excuse has been used before and has failed, including in VA to stop the rally this past weekend

LINK

quote:

A judge heard arguments Friday from attorneys requesting an emergency injunction stemming from a case against the city of Charlottesville and its decision to move the rally to McIntire Park, rather than at the planned Emancipation Park location.

quote:

"While the City is disappointed by tonight's ruling we will abide by the judge's decision. The goal in moving the Unite the Right Rally from Emancipation Park to a larger, more accommodating space like McIntire Park had nothing to do with the content of the demonstrators' speech. The decision was made based on the projected number of demonstrators expected in our one acre park in downtown and the public safety needs of our community.
