Ah. I see it now. You are one of those.

Jesus Christ, knighting for the media after the unethical atrocities and absolute dearth of morality exhibited over the past decade or so is unconscionable.

Humanity has to expand to Mars. Period.
why?

Don’t get me wrong I like the person who likes small government more (Elon) based on OPs question but why outside of your sci-fi aspirations do we need to expand to mars? It can’t support life. I understand the concept of humanity needing to expand to other planets where life is sustainable but we’re talking millenniums or more down the road where that becomes a necessity.

Elon getting us to Mars seems essential. We have no idea how many great things will come about because of the efforts to get us there. Perhaps it's something as simple as diverting 50% of the MIC monies we have been wasting on fomenting wars and migration and instead putting that towards something non harmful and useful like colonizing Mars and castrating intelligence agencies (the way we made impotent the USSR and our own nuclear arsenals).

You'd have to ask Elon, but I believe he thinks the extinction risks of a single planetary existence is fairly high.

Well, that's just dumb. We've kept space stations permanently inhabited for years. Space can't sustain life either. An earth-supplied base on Mars isn't an endgame.

So you and Elon are exactly on the same page except for timing? He thinks Earth is more imperiled than you do, so we need to set up a Mars contingency? Maybe that's all there is to it.
