Wrong. They caved and let women in. Remember Condaleeza? She's a member.

They let a few in but you don’t see a bunch of bullshite advertising. They only allow 4 minutes per hour. Augusta National controls everything.

Agreed on DEI. Please don’t give Jim Nantz credibility though, even by association.
He is an overrated cancer to the world of sport.

Because Augusta National Golf Club owned every particle of that event and you do it their way, or you don’t do it.

"The Majors" by John Feinstein is a great read.

For many years, the only two advertisers were Cadillac and Masters. The TV sponsors currently are AT&T, Mercedes, and IBM. Those are strictly controlled by Augusta National. In 1996, when Nike gave Tiger Woods that $40M contract, it was a bargain for Nike from an advertising perspective. Nike couldn't haver bought TV air time from the networks at any price, so all the minutes that Tiger's red shirt with the Nike logo was on screen were worth millions of dollars...actually priceless.

Until 1993, the only way you saw the front nine of Augusta National was if you had a ticket or were a member. The club refused to allow the front nine to be telecast before then.

And then there's the story of when Gary McCord (Tin Cup) said on air that the greens were so fast that Augusta National didn't mow the greens, they bikini waxed them. That was the last time McCord ever was on a telecast.

In 1966, when Jack Whitaker referred to the crowd as a "mob", he didn't work another Masters for 6 years. Referring to the fans as "patrons" by the broadcasters is a strict instruction by Augusta National.

They also drastically limit the number of commercials per hour. I think it's 4 minutes.

But the biggest example of Augusta's "frick you" money is the boycott of Masters sponsors Martha Burk tried to promote in 2003, Hootie Johnson basically said "we'll just see about that", and the Masters had no TV sponsors that year. Johnson was not going to subject the sponsors to the impact and bad press of a boycott. So they didn't have any. There were no TV commercials.

It is probably the most private and exclusive group in the world, certainly in sports. And they're going to run The Masters the way they think best serves the integrity and exclusivity of the club, and if that means no sponsors, they doin't care. They don't host that tournament to make money. In fact, they don't even charge the networks a dime to cover it.

Actually, speaking of cancer, after McCord's "bikini wax:" comment, Tom Watsom hand wrote a note, in pencil, to Augusta National, calling McCord a "lesion". That also was part of what got McCord fired.

Because it is easier to be a good watcher than a good a good golf player.

I don't usually watch golf, but the Masters is one I do watch. It's always great. If it was possible to get rid of the jackasses that yell "Get in the Hole" it would be better. Maybe if the jackasses that yell "Get in the Hole" were free game to beat with a golf club or allow hunters who get a bounty for each jackass shot dead who yelled "Get in the Hole", golf would gain a new audience.

I’m not a big golf guy but the Masters is one of the greatest sporting events of the year.

I don’t even think it’s that the club has the money. For as big as it is, The Masters is a cheap event and membership fees are not stupid. You can buy all 7 sandwiches on the menu for a total of $18.

The broadcast is tightly regulated. The club own the broadcast rights and maintains certain standards for the hosts for what they can say and use certain terms to describe the course. The club actually purchases the air time from CBS and runs limited commercials during the broadcast.

When they had the controversy with women memberships and their sponsors pulled out, they ran it commercial free.
