re: Arsenal 18/19 Season Thread

I think we are playing a very boring football right now. West Ham were literally the better opponent through the 90mins. They were creating much better chances than we did. Lacazette and Torreira must start, there was a big difference since they came in. I just can't see Ramsey fit in any position in Emery's philosophy. We should sell him while we still can, otherwise, he's going to leave for free next summer.

That's not what I saw at all. I actually feel like a team that can come back. I haven't checked the stats, but our shots are way up just by watching.
Normally we would go down early and be completely fricked.
And making changes at halftime! shite I actually love this approach. Arsene was never proactive.

Our attacking framework relies far too heavily on the combinations between Bellerin and Mkhi, and Mkhi is too narrow defensively. This is why I prefer 3 at the back systems for the players we have. If we play Auba and Laca together, this presents a problem because the left sided width needs to be there in order for Auba to play on the left, and I fear we would become too exposed, as we rely on our fullbacks for width almost exclusively.

Why I shy away from no bellerin. We don't have wingers. He gives us that down the rt. The cut backs have been worked on, it's obvious. I think he sucks at crossing the ball, but those cut backs are made to be put in the net.
And I wouldn't mind three at back, but we don't have a left wing. I love Monreal and think he can play at lcb, but again, we have no one else to bomb the left side. And he can actually put the ball in the net. I saw that ball go out to him and knew he was going to put it in.

Relying on wingbacks for width leads to inevitable problems with the counter-attack, hence why we went to the 3 at the back system in the first place. That's my major concern, as Sokratis and Mustafi look as vulnerable as any CB pairing we had under Wenger.

In the 3 games guendouzi drops in line with the CBS to collect the ball. Torreira has to be that guy. Only way to survive the 4 at the back.
I don't like mustafi, but he's our best option at the moment. Thought he was ok against West Ham. I still don't understand getting rid of Gabriel and now sending Chambers on loan. I'd rather learn on the fly with them.

Torreria should be, and I'm hoping he works with Xhaka as a partner. Guendouzi isn't ready yet. He's going to be a good player but we need him to develop a passing game like Xhaka's, as he's already superior on the defensive side.

Xhaka hasn't played well, but I totally agreed with the announcer. He's not a defensive midfielder even though he's built like one. He fricking sucks, but he's a god damn good passer.
Which is why I hold Arteta in such high regard. Dude would break up play and still complete more passes than everyone else in the league.

Torreira's range of passing and his vision have really surprised me in the short amount of time he's played so far. I didn't see that part of his game as much in the world cup. His game and Xhaka's should compliment each other fine. My big concern with Xhaka is when we are pressed. Especially the teams in the top 6 that do it(which is everyone besides United). If Xhaka has time on the ball he dictates the game very well and breaks lines with his passing but when pressed he gets loose with his passing in the defensive 3rd. Maybe Torreira helps take that pressure off of Xhaka.

Arteta and Santi were great. They were the two best midfielders we've had in the last couple of years, and Santi is honestly one of the top five players of the Wenger era for me. Santi provided a similar defensive contribution to Xhaka, but could dribble his way out of pressure and could deliver the final ball.

Xhaka acts like a crazy person any time he's pressured. He's the type of player you have to build a team around, and frankly he's not good enough to warrant that. His passing is elite, but he's terrible under pressure. I'm hopeful Torreria can progress to where Xhaka can move upfield and dictate the game closer to goal, because the moment we face a high press is the moment he loses his mind.

still don't understand getting rid of Gabriel
That was a very big mistake. He was the best individual CB we had, he just didn't had the communication with his teammates and that used to lead to mistakes. He was fast, very good tackler, he was reading the game fine and was a pretty good jumper. He was very similar like Koscielny and maybe that was the problem. Two CB's with same qualities just can't play together...
Posted on 8/26/18 at 4:55 pm to Mengel97
I'd wager he requested it, otherwise it doesn't make sense. Koscielny was on the other side of 30, and they didn't play together that often. His passing and reading of the game are better than Mustafi's. Hopefully Holding steps up, because I really dislike the Mustafi-Sokratis pairing.

I haven't followed much of him, he played a bunch of games for the new club, but God damn. He could cover ground.
And on your other point, mustafi and kosc are too much alike. Trying to win the tackle high up. We may need that partnership, but id rather mertesacker and kosc. I just can't believe our cb pairings has been so fricked when we have Steve Bould on staff.

Slightly OT, but does anyone have a way to listen to the radio broadcast of the matches?
Posted on 8/26/18 at 10:15 pm to JamalSanders
I'm not positive but I think arsenal.com carries audio of the matches.

And they're just playing very poorly. Hopefully the more they play together the better they'll get.
Pls hurry back kosc

The game time should do him some good. He's talented and I hope he comes back next year ready to contribute.
