then Arsenal have absolutely zero leverage concerning RVP?
We still have his contract, and at those prices, we can pretty much afford for him to leave on a free.

Pretty excellent article detailing who wins the most possession in the EPL. Song and Koscielny represented.
Too bad Lucas only played 1,045 minutes last season. He would have been at the top of that list again. He won possession 296 times in 2010/11 and had won it 102 times through 12 matches last season.

I've been saying this all along. Given his fitness issues, his age and his contract situation, there is no reason for any of these top clubs to invest a significant amount into his transfer fee.

Competition for his signature only helps. If we can get £20mil, he's gone. He'll still be good for another 3-4 years if healthy.

Well if the right price doesn't come we can always put RVP in timeout until he is ready to honor his contract and play out the year.

Yes but Arsenal won't get £20M for him. The only way I see that happening is if a Rooney/Aguero went down with an injury in the preseason. Like you said, he has 3-4 good years left if he stays healthy. £20M could be saved by waiting just 1 year.

But no guarantee of him picking you in free agency. Not to mention the added value this season. I know they ran away with things last year, but United and City will face stiffer competition this year.

I don't see either of those clubs valuing his possible input this season at £25M (transfer fee + wages).

But word is he'd prefer Juve. Like i said, no guarantee he signs for either of them on a free.

I don't think either are worried about that.

We should sell him to Juve even at a lesser price. Makes the most sense on our part. We will find out with the club if its about the money if we sell him within the country, especially to Man $hitty. Arsenal should tell RVP its either play out of country or play out your contract with us.

Well considering they both seem to covet him, I'm not sure that's true.

Like I said, I doubt either value his single season worth at 25M. Just take a look at the bids Arsenal have received from United, City and Juve so far as an example.
Neither one will lose sleep if he becomes a FA and goes to Juve. They've saved themselves a hell of a lot of money that could be put towards any other player in the world.

I agree with this. I was probably wrong thinking we could get 20-25m for rvp.
He doesn't hold ALL the cards--hell, sell him to Juve for 15m if he wants to go.
If we have to take less money because of his age issues and the fact he has us somewhat over a barrel, then the compromise is that he goes out-of-country.
Sell his arse. I don't want to see rvp in Arsenal colours this season.

Juve offered 10M and were turned down. They have begun bidding for other forwards now as it seems they don't want to go much higher than that.

When does Arsenal's preseason kick off?
Posted on 7/21/12 at 2:36 pm to LSUSOBEAST1
Well that's one way to look at it. It's a little inaccurate to say it's just on his one season. Injuries are a concern, sure, but he's always been a massive talent. Juve may not want to splash the big transfer fee on RvP, but if you think RvP can stay healthy, he's worth £20mil to lock up for 3-4 more great years. £25mil would certainly be higher than anyone would pay though.

His transfer fee + his would be wages is where I was getting that number.
You figure someone buys him for 15M and then pays him $175k a week, that adds up to 25M. He is not worth that for 1 extra year. I would take the risk and try signing him next summer.

Ah gotcha. My bad, you mentioned that earlier.
I guess my response would be, if you can get an extra year and guarantee him in the future, isn't a top 20 player (figured that position among the world greats would be pretty undebatable) worth the extra 10 million from what you originally bid? Juve's not going to go higher either a) because they can't afford it for whatever reason or b) because they are confident they can get him next summer if Arsenal doesn't give in. City or United however might realize they don't have as good a shot next summer and clearly place a lot of value in him. They may not value him at 20mil, but they definitely value him at more than 10 (you don't go with your highest bid first). He's a stone-cold lock to contribute 30 goals in a season on either of those teams (G+A).
Considering that could be tl;dr, my summary: if you value him around 15mil, why not pay 5mil more to secure his services, especially if you don't seem to be his preferred choice?
