Not a fan if that thinking, we haven’t won a knockout game since 2006 but everyone is looking ahead to the QFs.

Everyone was on Panama as the Cinderella story of the tournament. I was too.
I didn't get to watch most of the England match, so I heard the comments afterwards. I heard Jesse Lingard straight up say they played dirty. I thought, "wow, that's a bit harsh, a bit unguarded".

I am. Southgate may have that cricket ground demeanor of slightly standoffish slightly reserved Englishness to him, but I assure you that beneath it all is the beating heart of a man so desperate to win a major trophy with England that he would literally sacrifice his family and cut off his own genitals to make it happen.
He has spent every moment of every day planning this out, he played the B team and let them go through the easy route because he knows that even though there are no 'easy' games in the knockout stages, even a slight advantage is worth it. Pragmatism. And so in the the most ruthlessly pragmatic move of all England performances since Sir Geoff Hurst once tried to boot the ball clear into the stands to waste time, only to smash it into the top corner and win the world cup, Gareth Southgate told his team to go out and only sort of try to win and therefore lose. Big Sam would be so fricking proud.
Now they just need to go and practice penalties. Even though Germany are out, they are so very efficient that they may find a way back into the tournament somehow.
