Match Day 3/23 | WCQ in Asia & South America

World Cup qualifying is back and we get this round started with some sexy action in Asia and South America. Below I'll provide the usual TV info, but I'll recap the standings as well for those not well-versed in the qualifying process.
All Times CDT
AFC (Asia) - Matchday 6
Asia is already halfway through the final round of 10 games per side. The top two sides in each group qualify for Russia 2018. The third-placed sides in each group will have a playoff. Winner of the playoff advances to an intercontinental playoff against CONCACAF's fourth-placed team.
Group A
As expected, Group A is boiling down to a three-horse race. This matchday is a bit interesting because all three don't cross paths and all are away from home. Could be status quo heading into matchday 7, or an untimely slip up (all three are winnable away matches) could shake up the order.
China - South Korea, 6:35 a.m. (ESPN3)
Syria - Uzbekistan, 7 a.m.
Qatar - Iran, 11 a.m.
Group B
Saudi Arabia's ascent to the top of this group has been a bit of a surprise, but it's been overshadowed by UAE's emergence as a surprise fourth contender. This group was expected to very much be Japan, Australia and anyone's guess for third place. May yet turn out that way, but through five games nothing is certain in the slightest. UAE got a surprise result in Japan and will be looking to double up on that at home.
Iraq - Australia, 7 a.m. (ESPN3)
Thailand - Saudi Arabia, 7 a.m.
UAE - Japan, 10:30 a.m. (ESPN3)
CONMEBOL (South America) - Matchday 13
Six matches left in the most rigorous qualifying campaign in the world, highlighted by a couple of marquee showdowns: a top-two battle in Uruguay vs. Brazil and Argentina vs. Chile in Buenos Aires. Argentina are clinging to fifth, which would garner a playoff against the Oceania winner - likely to be New Zealand. Top four are automatically in, but South America rated highly to have five berths at the end of the day.
Colombia will (should) benefit from a home game against Bolivia to get back in the top 5 mix while Paraguay's last stand to be in contention could be this home match against third-placed Ecuador. Peru could yet make some noise as they are away to bottom side Venezuela - who will sport Atlanta's red hot striker Josef Martínez. /endplug
Colombia - Bolivia, 3:30 p.m. (beIN)
Uruguay - Brazil, 6 p.m. (beIN)
Paraguay - Ecuador, 6 p.m. (beIN Connect 5)
Argentina - Chile, 6:30 p.m. (beIN español/beIN Connect 4)
Veneuzela - Peru, 6:30 p.m. (beIN Connect 6)

Oh hell yes. I am prepared for the theatrics involved with CONMEBOL matches. Would rather see Argentina and Chile though, the Brazilian theatrics are a little much

Aussies really fricked up the last 15 minutes in Tehran against Iraq. Entertaining last few minutes of end to end action though

I'm trying to figure out when you have time to type all that with a 8 month old...
Those CONMEBOL games are pretty stacked though. Kinda wish I had BeIn still.

I know there's still a long ways to go, but what I'm most shocked about is still Ecuador sitting up there in third.
Can you imagine the melt if Ecuador takes a guaranteed spot and one of (possibly both, due to the playoffs, but highly unlikely) Argentina & Colombia are left at home?
Oh yeah, Brazil is fixing to go in dry. 7 points clear at the top after today

Uzbekistan come on. Damnit.

Yep. Koreans gagged on one against China, but Uzbekistan derped it right back against Syria. Iran now 4 clear at the top of the group.
Big win for Japan in the other group and now it's Australia sitting in third a point behind Saudi Arabia and Japan.
Stoked to get home and watch the games tonight. Gonna be awesome.

Austalia and Japan need to pass up Saudi.
The 5th place AFC team plays 4th place CONCACAF in the playoff, if that's the rout we have to go through, I'd rather it not be Australia or Japan. Yeah, we should beat both of them, but still...

Colombia looks like utter shite against an awful Bolivia team.

The CONMEBOL & CAF qualifiers are always great to watch because literally anything can happen, whether it's a non-call, phantom-call or an all-out war. The shitty feed that beIN provides only makes the sketchiness of those two confeds so much more interesting.

South America is woefully underrepresented at the World Cup. The best teams to miss are always South America and Europe. Some other federations need fewer spots.

Who's the guy struggling for English calling the game with Phil?
Posted on 3/23/17 at 9:07 pm to BraveTiger225
And look at Qatar. Just imagine next world Cup cycle that crappy team doesn't have to qualify.
Posted on 3/23/17 at 9:13 pm to ColonelTiger88
Just takes away a spot that should've gone to someone worth a damn

I actually enjoyed watching Neymar tonight, wish he would play like that all the time. He ran through tackles and actually got fouled once or twice and didn't get the call and abstained from wallowing around on the pitch like he'd just been tasered.
