Sorry, fellas. Was away from the board for a while and didn't know I was causing a meltdown. Have no idea why this happened, either. I'll fix it promptly.

You are good now.
Edit: You're still a Manchester United fan though.

Yeah, PicturePush was freaking out for some reason. I have no clue why.

I don't think they will tighten the spending until they feel comfortable with their youth system which is a focal point for them now.
Setting up a youth system doesn't happen overnight. It took La Masia nearly 10 years before they produced their first youth product. It will take many years before the youth system will produce players on a consistent basis. Chelsea have spent plenty on youth, and have had very few players who have come through to the first team. It's taken them nearly 10 years since Abramovich took over to produce their best ever prospect. My guess is that City will continue to spend, but not at their current level.

So the moral high horse of "well at least my club does it the right way" and "i will sleep well tonight knowing that my club doesn't buy players" is good for message board arguments and moral victories. But people are concerned about trophies. Moral victories don't look good in trophy case. Manchester United has won titles because they have the money to consistently field a top flight team. Now City have that ability too. Does this translate into prolonged success? Probably not, at least not the level of success that Man U has enjoyed.
Well fricking said. This whole post was excellent.

People who knock city for spending money they haven't earned need to take a step back and look harder at the make-up of the game the today.
Manchester United (and other top clubs across Europe) have made huge strides in making the game more uneven over the last twenty years. They continually forced UEFA's hand by threatening to form their own breakaway league, and we now have a scenario where a team that finishes fourth in the Premier League gets a fricking shite ton more money than the team that finishes fifth.
This essentially ensures a hegemony of the top European clubs, which they have to be spectacularly badly managed (see: Liverpool) to find their way out of.
But not content with even this, the big clubs went one step further and ensured that should any team break into their little hegemony (by managing to finish higher than a team that had twice the resources at it disposal over the course of a season), that they still wouldn't get an even slice of the pie. I'm not going to go into the boring nitty gritty of how the UCL and PL pies are divided up, but it's a fricking farce and it makes a mockery of the idea that this is on any level, a sport. (If anyone does want a simple but in depth critique there's probably a few over at swissramble).
Manchester United, and the other top clubs, brought this situation on themselves. They designed, broke ground on built the uneven playing field we're stuck on now. They left us with a situation where the only plausible scenario where a midtable club with good support (See: Citeh, Chelsea) could challenge them was to somehow gain around half a billion pounds of investment. I don't see why anyone would complain that the gap is being closed, that just makes it interesting.

Their payoff may be worth it for them, but it's bad for the game. I don't know how anyone can disagree with that.
I don't know if I agree.. because if they didn't win this year they'd just spend MORE money next year.. whereas if they win this year they might not buy THAT many more players.

If City sells Balotelli back to Inter, I won't give them a hard time about their finances anymore.

Sportscenter is totally overselling this rivalry. I mean it's a good rivalry, but it's not as big as they claim.
Eh, if it gets more people in America to like soccer and thus more games on tv, more money for the MLS, etc.. I'm all for overselling.

If United would have won, it would've been less of a deal in the States tonight, I believe
Of course it wouldn't.. Because then United just keeps the lead.
It's a much bigger story for them to be tied on points..

Thank you so much for posting this.
I'm not a fan of any EPL club but much of the back and forth in this thread completely misses this point.

Great post overall. I don't disagree in the slightest. My gripe was with the hate and the comparison to the Yankees and all this bullshite. Manchester United is successful, and that does seem suspect to see someone in the States as a fan. I also know my reasons for being a fan, and I'm okay with being hated as I've shown here many times. I like being "The Hunted". To be honest, I enjoy it more when Chelsea and City are challenging for the top of the table because it drives United to make more moves. I'm also not that disappointed that City won. It extends the season for me. Instead of celebrating tonight and watching a victory lap, I can hope for a City loss or United "crickets scores".
My point is this: I understand the hate, and I understand that success will always put them on that podium, just like the Patriots and John Stamos. When you're one of the best, people either want to be you or beat you. That said, United is hated for success, but I hardly think you can say they just went out one day and bought it. I'd really love to see better mid-table academies so more parity in the EPL, if anything, so United can get credit for earning titles instead or people just expecting it.
