It was still the right call.

Your point is entirely moot here, dude.

That was a penalty.

You do realize that a replay would have confirmed it was the right call. Now, a rule change is totally different story, but it was a PK whether you like it or not.

Yup. If the ref fricks up the call, he has to live with it.

And, refs are definitely more hesitant to give calls within the box because of their potential impact. Replays would hamper the game so much, seriously.

Now, consider what you are proposing replays for calls. Wouldn't you also have to consider contact that wasn't called? Where do you draw the line?

I don't understand why there is any question about the penalty. Marquez stepped on his fricking foot.

Imagine score lines with replay. 10-8 is your mean.

Yep...FIFA rules say a PK is awarded based on direct free kick offenses. Going on the direct free kick rules, it was the right call:
quote:

A direct free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any of the following seven offences in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force:
- kicks or attempts to kick an opponent
- trips or attempts to trip an opponent
- jumps at an opponent
- charges an opponent
- strikes or attempts to strike an opponent
- pushes an opponent
- tackles an opponent

It was a foul but he certainly exaggerated it.

I'm not disagreeing with you and I'm certainly glad that Marquez got nailed.

However, let's be honest...if that were called on the US and we lost like that, we'd be pissed.

Still, frick Mexico.

Of course he exaggerated. Who the frick wouldn't? You want to make sire the ref sees that foul.

ESPN's analyst just said it shouldn't have been a penalty.

All I know is I saw the Mexican guy get taken down much more harshly in the box in the first half and the referee kept his whistle in his mouth and it decided the game on the biggest stage in the sport.

Not it didn't. Are you watching Mexican ESPN? RVN said it was, Martinez said it was a harsh call but could have gone either way.
