Trying to watch some USA soccer before the world cup and since this is a big game. What are some basic things to look out for for someone who doesn't follow the US national team very closely?

A- Where's Messi? Find him and try to stop him.

B- We will go forward in attack tonight but we cannot turn the ball over in the midfield and/or when we have numbers forward. If/when we lose the ball, we always need to have 3/4 men back to defend the break.

Argentina will control most of the possession and will have a majority of the chances. To be expected...

We will have to be patient. We cant turn the ball over in transition and will have to be very efficient with our chances. I think we will have 3-4 good chances on goal. If we score on 2 even 1 of those, we have a chance.

I talked to our soccer coach at conditioning today (I'm a HS basketball coach) and he said basically we will pack it in to stop their firepower and hope for 4-5 chances to counter.

Is that essentially what you are saying?

We'll have a better idea once we see the lineups but yeah, that's everyone's guess.

So from the little bit I've read, and what someone on here just said, a big key for the US success in every match is to have an aggressive mindset. How d we keep that mindset while essentially playing defense all game?

Controlled aggression is the key. Think of it as not sitting on our heels but by focusing more on organization and shape than anything else. Like a football team with a great defense, you may run the ball in more situations and take the occasional shot down the field. We're very much going to be playing the field position game here.

The extreme of this is how we played against Belgium in the last World Cup. We had 9 field players behind the ball at all times, sometimes 10 and even when we won the ball we could only clear it forward - no chance of real meaningful possession. We have to defend first - keep players behind the ball, but look to counter and transition out of our defensive third quickly. Find the space to get out, look up for the vertical ball if the midfielder can get his head up, and then get forward.

Man sounds like a very dangerous gameplan with little room for error, although I suppose we don't have a choice playing perhaps the best team in the world

If the games tied after 90 minutes of play. (We can only hope) It'll go straight to PKs

Conversely, when in possession, Argentina will flood our half with numbers and push men very high up the field. When we win the ball back on defense, if we can beat the initial press via quick passing or dribbling, there will be guaranteed space behind their defense for us to run into. I have no doubt we will get 3-5 solid chances to score tonight, even Venezuela was unlucky not to score 3 goals, we just HAVE to be clinical and take our chances, because Argentina will have a dozen or so.

Really the keys for being successful against Argentina have some resemblance to basketball.

Argentina has extremely dangerous attackers all over their front line and the US will definitely suffer if these guys get on the ball with space.

One way to cut that down is keeping pressure on their deeper midfielders who are wanting to spray passes around to isolate their attackers. Not much different that pressuring a slick passing PG; making him take more time to pass to allow the defense to shift.

Like your friend says, it will be a counter attacking strategy against Argentina. At some points, the US will need a bit of possession to get a breath but a good argument can be made that Argentina poses even more danger when the US has the ball and is pushing pushing into attacking positions. Argentina will be hard to defend when the US defense is set up but absolutely deadly if the US starts allowing them to counter attack with numbers.

The key to countering effectively is mainly a numbers game. If our fullbacks and defensive midfielders are getting beaten so much on dribbles that every player is dropping a level deeper to help defend we're not going to be effective even picking out 5 or 6 dangerous counter attacks.

Similar to basketball where having to send all 5 players into the lane just to get the defensive rebound means you're probably not going to be that effective fast breaking.

It is easier to get a result in soccer due to the limited scoring if the defense stays focused and you get a few lucky breaks.

The other side of it is--continuing the basketball analogy-- Argentina has any number pf players in addition to Messi that can make highlight reel shots and passes almost no matter how well defending.

It's a big match, because it's against Argentina, but the tournament doesn't really mean anything. The real Copa is played every 4 years. Chile won it last year. This is a special edition tournament. Next time it's really played is 2019 in Brasil. The winner of the real Copa America qualifies for the 2017 Confederations cup, which Chile did by winning it last year.

I get annoyed by this attitude. What do you qualify for if you win the World Cup?

If the US by some stroke of luck/inspired play wins this cup, then it's one of the biggest wins in USMNT history. Maybe right below dos a cero in 02
