It’s hard for those without tactical knowledge to really enjoy a game and for that game to be interesting.

And I’m not saying that sitting on a high horse. My eye can see runs developing, can understand how two formations compare to each other, can understand goalkeeper technique and breakdowns that lead to a goal.

If you don’t know what you’re looking at, I can see how it could suck. I don’t know how to play chess and I assume if I watched a chess match I’d be completely bored. If I knew how to play, I’d be thinking about my next move.

It’s very similar in many ways.

A few days ago I recorded a WC game and an hour in I heard it was 0-0 so I started it and just fast forwarded it knowing nothing happened

I can’t understand that there are people who would sit there and just watch passing and flopping back and forth

If the only thing you care about are goals, then maybe basketball is more your speed.

#1 step, watch a game with fellow supporters. That'll help make the experience better.

It’s ok but I can’t stand still and watch a whole game without getting bored.

What advice do you have to follow a sport that most of the time ends 1-0 or 2-1 or even 0-0?

#2 I cant tell you how many times Ive had to explain this part. Dont watch soccer for goals. Thats what everyone first starts with, and its bad bad bad. Soccer is about opportunities. If you only get excited for goals, you'll get excited 1, maybe 2, maybe 3 times in 90 minutes. Opportunities is where the real hype is. Seeing chances unfold, especially counters, man Im getting hyped talking about it. This typically happens 10+ times a game. Thats how you get into it, and you'll realize theres not a lot of boring time.

Once you get that part down, you'll start to watch for spacing, and essentially whats going on where the ball is not. This is when you'll start to hate or love players.

Once you combine these two things, you wont even have time to be bored. Like I said above, theres soooo much to soccer other than scoring. And when you start to notice these small details, it'll make the goals that much better.

Not every sport is for everyone. And that's ok. I don't watch nascar or golf or cricket, but I also don't whine about them.

This post must have started on the MSB and got switched over.

If you don't watch bc of an 0-0 score, the sport isn't for you. Scoring isn't the only exciting part of the match. And I don't think you need to understand the technical aspects of it to enjoy it. I never played soccer and I can still see the beauty in midfield play and incredible runs that don't amount to a shot on goal.

The only way to appreciate soccer is to see a professional match live. It's just one of those sports that's much more impressive in person... like baseball.. and hockey...

Football is really the only sport that's truly better watched on TV.

Unfortunately, the only way most Americans get to watch soccer is on TV.

I find it exciting because of the low scoring. I like the anxiety of waiting for a goal. Sure some games suck, but ive seen a lot of shite football games as well.

Plus yo got to have a team to root for. Just like with NFL, i dont watch unless the Saints are playing. Really not interested in sitting through 4 hours of commercials to watch anyone else.

This too, i put money on both France and Croatia before the tourney. So I was ecstatic watching them take down England yesterday.

Croatia was all excited because they had to tie or win to advance and it's like "I watched the end of this to watch a tie?" It feels unfinished, but whatever.

Croatia won all their games. WTF are you even on about?

Every match, pick one player to watch during the match. Any time that player is shown, just follow him around and watch what he does.

Do this a couple of times for players at different positions.

Why would you try and get into soccer? If you're not interested in it, why bother?

I loved getting into soccer. It was a huge undertaking. Seems strange now, but I had no concept of how leagues and cups worked, getting my head around the leagues and the competitions and players, figuring out how transfers worked, etc. Just getting familiar with that, let alone tactics and history, was overwhelming. But I like learning about things I know nothing about, and enjoyed all of it. I'm still learning, and still enjoying it.

If that doesn't appeal to you, don't waste your time on it. Or enjoy it the way you want to. Just watch the World Cup. Who cares?

The "convince me to like soccer" mindset of some American sports fans is crazy. I don't like basketball or tennis so you know what I do? I don't watch them.

I've never once gone to a basketball or tennis fan and said "This sport sucks! Tell me why I'm wrong!"

I mean, there is/was a lot of negativity toward soccer from fans of other sports. I came from that group and there was probably a time where I'd shite on soccer just for the hell of it.

So people who enjoyed the world cup but are hesitant (ridiculous as it is) to really get into soccer, sure, I'm happy to extol the virtues of it.

But if you've tried but haven't gotten into it - that I don't understand. Although the tips about trying to watch and compare players in similar roles is good advice.

That's how you get the bug. The rest you pick up over time.
