This isn't obscure, but perhaps we have some youngsters or novices on the board today. Anyways, the United States went 40 years between qualifying for a World Cup before Paul Caliguiri scored from 30+ yards out on Trinidad & Tobago to win 1-0 and secure a spot in the 1990 tournament in Italy. This is undoubtedly one of the most important moments in USMNT history. Other than qualifying for the first time in 40 years, this gave us a bit more legitimacy on the world stage because we earned a spot in the tournament. If we had failed to make it, our only entry would have been as host country in 94'. Yet, other than that magical summer in 1994, the USMNT went a combined 0-6 in the 2 World Cup tournaments that were not played in the United States, but in Italy 90' and France 98'. And 30 years later now, we had a chance to secure qualification again in Trinidad for Russia and failed to earn a point and get it done. So once again, we face a daunting task in making the next World Cup before earning the automatic bid as host in 2026. We might have to bring in Bora!

My second guess was going to be “someone from Leeds”

80% of goals are scored after the 75th minute.

This is awesome.
I have another one. Tim Howard has Tourette’s and played basketball growing up, and his idol was also a basketball player with Tourette’s. It was LSU’s very own Chris Jackson.

I’m not sure it’s my favorite, but I always found it stunning that Turkey made it through seven games to finish 3rd in the 2002 World Cup without facing a single European team.
They played:
Brazil
Costa Rica
China
Japan
Senegal
Brazil (again)
South Korea

Tony Hibbert played for Everton for over 15 years, made +300 appearances, and only scored one goal.
...and it was such an absolute banger that it caused a pitch invasion.

and only scored one goal.
And it technically didn't count because it was in a testimonial match for himself... despite the fact that he would go on to play 6 more season for Everton.

Saahdiq Charles soccer article has a great quote from the time the LSU O line coach came to watch one of his soccer games.
quote:
“The offensive line coach from LSU (Jeff Grimes, who coached at LSU from 2014-2017) had seen Saahdiq play goalkeeper before and saw how athletic he was, but this time I was going to put him in the field if we got ahead by a large margin. So we were ahead by six or seven goals at half and the LSU coach was there watching. We didn’t have any jerseys big enough to fit him so we found a white T-shirt, put black electric tape for his numbers and put him out there. In the first few minutes of the second half, Saahdiq got the ball around midfield, juked about three guys, dribbled down the field and barely missed scoring a goal. All of his teammates and the fans were going crazy about what great moves Saahdiq had. I looked up at the LSU coach and he was on the phone with Coach O (Ed Orgeron) telling him they had sign him.”

Glenn Murray hasn't played in MLS.
But surprisingly he did make his professional debut in America back in 2004 for the now-defunct Wilmington Hammerheads in the USL.
He then went back to England and worked his way up the levels of the English game. That's a pretty unique story. There can't be many other English-born players playing in the top four leagues in England that made their professional debut outside of England.
Jack Harrison fits that mold, but he played college soccer and signed a Generation Adidas contract with MLS, so it makes sense that he debuted here. Murray did not follow that path, so it's strange he debuted in the USL.

One fact that always stayed in my head.
2010 world cup, Uruguay was the only country to not have a single player play in its domestic league.
Also Mario Balotelli played 70 games in the EPL and had just one assist. The assist for Aguero to win the league.
