I just keep thinking back to when I was playing. Most coaches were dads that really didn't know much. They didn't grow up with it, didn't play it, didn't really know how to teach technical skills. As it grows, kids will get better coaching from the start. I never played club, but I didn't have a coach that really knew what he was doing until I was in 7th grade.

Dude I'm right there with you. When I was growing up, I didn't have any options to play, so I played with the Hispanic immigrants every three days at the park next to my house. I learned all my tactics and what I should do in every situation from fricking up.

I'm even thinking about trying to get a coaching license or something so I can contribute. I really want, more than anything, for the US to win the WC, or at least look like we could.

Yeah a Russell Westbrook/Odell Beckham/Patrick Peterson type wouldn’t translate

The players we've had who were physical specimens couldn't maximize their talent because of our inability to impart the appropriate technical education. We would waste the athletic ability of those players just like we wasted the athletic ability of previous players. The issue is technical development, not athleticism.

And the top ten soccer players in the world generally are a lot smaller than those athletes.

Doesn't matter. It's not why we aren't very good right now.

If you consider infrastructure in the same breath as admitting our elite athletes aren’t playing it does

How good would Mbappe be if he grew up playing soccer in the U.S. instead of being developed by youth academies in France?

For the 1000th time, we can win the World Cup with the type of athletes we have now. Athletic ability is not and never has been the issue.

I don't. Those are two separate things. The player pool is one aspect you do not have control of. Technical education is important and can be controlled for. Pirlo, Xavi, Iniesta, Cannavaro, Messi, Modric, and a whole slew of other technical wizards would destroy a team of the best athletes we have if our technical education remains the same. The technical gap is massive. We would waste the athleticism of the players you mentioned just like we wasted the athleticism of the players we've had, who are already more athletic than the players we usually face.

true but Croatia does it without even one black athlete so I don't see that as an excuse. Many countries much much smaller than the US are able to excel in soccer without the black athlete. Even just our non black population far exceeds the populations of these other countries.

Simple the best athletes play other sports

If the question is why aren't we dominating the rest of the world, then this is the answer.

But if the question is why aren't we as good as many of these tiny countries with less people, money & resources, the answer to the question is what the rest of the smart guys on here are saying. Under current circumstances, pay to play, poor coaching, bad soccer culture, etc etc are the downfalls of US Soccer.

If everything were turned upside down and the majority of the best American athletes played soccer, the best league would exist here and the USMNT would dominate like no one ever has. If our best athletes were soccer players and soccer was our only major sport, it would also mean that all of our resources, money, sporting culture, and the rest of it would go towards soccer. Everything being equal, we do sports better than anyone else.

Yep...

Lukaku is viewed as a physical beast in soccer. And he’s what? 6’3 210lbs?

You don’t have to be a physical specimen to be great at soccer. You gotta have touch, technique, and a strong understanding of the game.

true all these other countries do it with out Odel westbrook etc. type athletes.
the real question is why are our white people so less capable than their white people.? We have 300 million of them and they only have 80 million (england) or Croatia (5 million)

And Lukaku is a massive outlier. Belgium has a shite ton of size too, but they have superb technical education, so they can produce players like Hazard and Fellaini, who despite their physical differences, can control most passes directed toward them, and can execute what they want to do according to their athletic ability. What I mean is that their athletic ability and size aren't there to mask their technical deficiency. They are there to be used as a compliment to their technical ability.

the same reason hispanics instead of travel ball kids dominate Major League Baseball for the most part the past 15 years or so.

the best players are the ones that grow up poor af and play from sun up to sundown from the time they are 5 until they hit puberty because it's literally all they have to escape their shitty lives.

the US soccer system was set up so you practice 2 hours a day then go home and play a couple games.

to truly be great you have to live with a ball at your feet from the time you stand up until you are a professional. you wont get that kind of dedication from kids whose home life is so comfortable that their parents can afford to pay thousands a year to put them on a travel team

Because they play more than we do is the 101 answer.
