Rapinoe has positioned herself so that any man who criticizes her is a misogynist or anti-LGBT, among casual fans who want to cheer specifically for a woman’s sports team and don’t know much about soccer.
There's a shrine to her in the frigging National Archives.

This game being lost on penalties stings way less knowing it was her shitty penalty that did it.

I'm happier than anyone. I tried to bet a parlay of US wins + game goes to penalty kicks + Herr Rapinoe scores. The app kept spinning and I couldn't get in.

Morgan looked like she shouldn’t have been a starter throughout this Cup. Whether she should be in the 23 is hard for me to say, but it’s Lynn Williams is certainly better now.

The problem is none of the top attacking players are great hold-up players (but neither is Morgan, so that’s a moot point).

Rapinoe positioned herself in a selfish way to be the face of the national team. During the game, Aly Wagner said some things that were fair critiques and expressed surprise she was brought in as the first sub.

Second (Lynn was first) but I get your point.

I think I commented during the first game that she was only playing against Vietnam so she could get some minutes in the tourney. I legit thought there was zero chance she’d play any meaningful minutes, especially coming off the recent injury. I wasn’t even concerned about it. When she came on against Portugal and was bad, it was like, that sucked, but no chance she sees the field over Thompson next game.

Then she saw the field again. Like, she seeks out the media so some blame will fairly fall upon her, but to put her on the field (whether that’s coaching or a decision from higher up) is insane.

It seemed so easy to have Smith up top and Rodman and Williams on the wings… but what do I know?

Also, missing Swanson was such a big loss for this team.

Wait what did Lynn Williams say?

ETA: I misunderstood your post. My bad

You’re right that Lynn came in first for Rodman

Then she should have stepped aside and let a younger player live her dream.

Rap deserves every bit of criticism for selfishly clogging up a roster spot.

This is such an absurd take. You’ve played sports, right?

Athletes always think they’re great. That’s one of the reasons they got to where they were in the first place. This isn’t Ryan Gosling in remember the titans giving up his spot.

The coach decides whether or not she plays. If you get the call, basically every player is going to say yes whether you’re actually deserving or not

If we’re at 118 minutes 0-0 and still have a sub left I’m actually okay bringing Rapinoe on for penalties haha

I've only watched her play in the World Cups. She played poorly 90% of the games I've watched her in.

So you've only watched this tournament. Good to know.

There's no doubt she wasn't great in this WC. She didnt score a single goal. That is crazy for one of the greatest scorers in WNT history.

Looking back now, the missed PK vs Vietnam was a bit of foreshadowing for how the rest of this tournament would go.

But even she said our attacking front had no chemistry. That 100% falls on management. How can you run a lineup out there that has never played together before until the first game of a WC?

Although I have to believe this team would've been alot better with a healthy Macario, Mal and even a Christen Press (who was incredible in 19 when paired with Morgan).

While not having those players is a legit reason for the lack of scoring, there's still no excuse for what we just watched. The WNT had more than enough capable players to put the ball in the net.

It was the obvious decision but the coach is a dipshit.

But the biggest disappointment of the tournament for me was Morgan. She was just bad in every match.

Lots of players were disappointing compared to how they play for club. I’m pissed we didn’t see more Alyssa Thompson. Seems like a wasted opportunity.
