I'll never forget being in that stadium in 1996 in the Olympics final. My dad got us great seats....in the Nigerian section.

They do. They also have two different confederations tournaments.

egypt counters with a weird stretching circle of their own. looks to be an evenly matched game

They’ve changed it recently for this cycle. I thought it was better but then you get Nigeria Ghana and Algeria in one group (or some combo of good teams that shouldn’t be in same group) and it’s still stupid. I guess now it’s more fair than random Home and Home playoffs.

That's what I was thinking of. Thank you.

They should just follow the UEFA model, as UEFA has 55 member associations while CAF has 54. Africa's best teams often don't make the tournament. The West African teams are usually loaded with talent, and since the French reorganization in 1988, both North African and West African teams have benefited from players being trained in France but electing to play for their nation of origin.
The problem is that Africa is so big that there isn't a great model to emulate.

I wonder how much their qualifying structure is influenced by how resource poor most of their nations are. They basically conducted qualifying with fewer than half of the matches played by UEFA teams
