Its NOT. The price goes up when they add "bell and whistles".. most of that stuff no-one ever uses. 11 channels, 3 zone, etc etc etc.
The bottom line "features" have ZERO to do with REAL POWER to make great AUDIO.
Anthem is TOP DOG at the moment unless you go with Separates. i.e. - Pre-Amp, Amp, Eq, etc etc

Finally someone who has Common Sense and understands "long term value".

This board loves cheap shite. I get push back all the time for suggesting anything of quality. I've been selling audio equipment for 16 years and I agree you pay for what you get.

Not trying to derail but since I have all of you experienced audio guys in here can anyone tell me if episode speakers or any good?

Not disputing that, but that is not what the OP asked for.

They are an AV distributor's in house brand. Not that there is anything wrong with that and they are of good quality. I would listen to them and see if you like them. Everybody hears things differently. You might like hot dogs but the next guy might hate them.

Search around and be patient. A few months ago I got a Denon AVR2200X for $400. I absolutely love the receiver. I bought a new set of speakers at the same time and they are still sitting in the closet. My towers sound so much better with the Denon that I'm in no rush to get the inwalls put in.
I did a ton of research and listened to everything I could find under the $1k mark and this one met all of my needs.
7.2
Zone 2 controls
ease of setup
4k upscaling
I listen to music almost every night, my wife is the tv/movie person. It was imperative that something could handle both of those tasks well. Generally you find a receiver that's better for music or better for movies. It's great with the movies and delivers exceptional sound quality for the music as well. There are better receivers out there and I listened to them, but they were vastly more expensive.

And at $1400 for all Anthem offers, it is certainly a stellar value--you get what you pay for.
It will last 20 years...this will be the OP's 4th receiver in how many years?
I know you have really high-end stuff and know your shite, but as far as lasting 20 years, the pre-amp part will be outdated way sooner than that the way things go.
Sure the amp is great and the quality is great, but pre-amp/receiver still suffering from the movements in the industry.
Each successive generation of receivers:
Coaxial/Optical Audio (DD/DTS) -> HDMI (DTS:MA/ Dolby True Era) -> HDMI 1.4 3D -> 4K -> HDCP 2.2 4K -> Atmos/DTS:X
So while I still just run a Yamaha Aventage Receiver, if I ever went higher end, I'd go separates just for this reason.

I get that HT receivers and Pre-pros seem to date faster than most other pieces of audio gear due to the fact that they have processors that change as newer formats are introduced.
However, the average HT set up still uses 5.1 Dolby Digital (according to Anthem and Bryston at the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest this past week). I would think that while new things like Atmos come out, very few people have the means, space, or wife acceptance factor to have such things (13 speakers, 2 subs).
Many of the HT new features that come out are kinda only for a very small populace. Take Atmos--how many average Americans do you really think are going to first get a new receiver just to add Atmos, and then buy a pair of speakers and then mount them in the center ceiling to get the effect (which is minimal)?
Not many.
I have seen 9.1, 10.1, 10.2, 11.2, 13.2 surround modes over the years, and numerous iterations of DD and DTS, but not many people really utilize all those channels and subs.
For most but the extreme HT person, I doubt that there will be anything that will come out in a HT pre/pro or receiver in the next 15 years that will be that significant a feature that would warrant someone who isn't an HT extremist to need to change equipment.
That is why the Anthem is a good value. It has every processor known to date, and is well built and sounds fantastic--making it a great VALUE. In fact, the 510 and 710 allow one to bridge 2 unused channels to give more power to the mains--pretty useful feature!
If the OP has been using $300-$400 receivers for the last 10 years, then I bet it is safe to say he probably is not running a 13.2 system with Atmos and dual subs. So, even if some new HT processor gizmo/feature comes out in 5 years, chances are the OP will not even use it or need it. Thus, the Anthem will last him 15+ years.
If Dolby Digital Rectum comes out with 2 channels mounted under you arse, will the average Joe sell his 13.2 pre/pro for the new Rectum 15.2 set up?
Probably not--just the extreme HT folks will.
And the Anthem delivers much better power too--making a plain old 5.1 sound better than a 5.1 from a BestBuy piece of gear.
For what it's worth, my main rig has a 13 year old Rotel RSP 1068 pre/pro running the HT through a bypass---it is 13 years old and I run 5.1 DTS or DD (it will do 7.2--I just don't do that, and I pass HDMI direct to the Pioneer plasma from an OPPO player).
Since it was a well built piece and not junk, it has seen 13 years of service being left on 24/7/365....almost 100,000 hours with zero issues (the cable box for main TV runs all day through it).
It was $1800 13 years ago, but it's value has been proven in its constant use without issues.
That is the point that I was trying to make with the Anthem piece.
Trust me, if I wanted to be an audio elitist, I would have suggested Meridian, McIntosh, Bryston, or Krell (all $15k and up)....they are all really good, but don't exhibit VALUE--the Anthem does.
Hope this clears it up.

Very good post. I do feel some of those iterations are important though, like having HDMI capable receiver to accept all these sources. I definitely do prefer something in DTS HD or Dolby TrueHD vs DD and DTS.
I have an "average joe" system but I have high efficiency speakers (Chase SHO-10) and dual Outlaw subs to help give a flatter response across the room.

My pioneer Elite plasma 50" has about 80,000 hours on it. I believe part of the reason it is absolutely trouble free is that it is never turned off and on--it stays on 24/7/365...9 years now.
I have a second one just like it new in box I picked up last year for $1500--I have still yet to find a panel that can touch it.

Great value in the yamaha RX-v67x series when on sale (usually $300 on black friday)
Yamaha RX-V679 for $299.95 at Amazon

Some of Anthem's are of Chinese manufacture origin. If you can find one that's actually manufactured in Canada you'll be in good shape. However their separates are usualy made in Canada. Some of theirs are madd in Taiwan or Vietnam and that should be okay.

Damn, I wish I could have someone like you come over and tell me what to do with all my tech
Early this year I put together a HT and got the Denon x2200w which I'm happy with. I should be; I'm probably using 10% of the features on it. I mean I have all kinds of speakers hooked up to it but it would good to know how to really get a lot out of it. I did get some Atmos speakers too.
Are there any good businesses that do that?

I got a new one in April for $499. Where'd you get 400? Anyway, seems like a great receiver although I don't use everything it has to offer.

I have 2 sonys that I have been pleased with.
For me they integrated well with the Sony TV I have and I got some extra HDMI ports since it combines the ports on the TV and the receiver.
The only reason I'll ever upgrade is maybe their upper line so I can get dual HDMI out (surprisingly hard to find).
