Ouch. I wonder wgat everyone else on here makes. Have you considered leaving state gubment? I left and am glad I did.
We may have an opening soon that pays more. It's a consulting gig so you'd be dealing with clents but only in a technical capacity. If you'd be interested, email me at my username without spaces at gmail. Guy who does what you do is about to move out of state. They may fill the position internally, but they will likely interview people either way just to see what's out there.

He's probably the first TD poster to be honest about his salary though.
EDIT: I've dreamed of having an IT-related job, but I feel like the reality is far less fun. And it doesn't help that I have zero certifications. Plus, I enjoy working from home.

that's such a broad statement. You can't generalize and group all IT-related jobs together.

It was meant to be a broad statement. It's tough for me to mix hobbies with work. I was an avid writer and a willing editor before I got hired for my current job, which involves a lot of writing and editing, and now writing/editing is less of a passion and more of a sharpened skill.

Partner management advisor for a Global PC hardware manufacturer. Though, specifically my role is to market programs to a subset of commercial accounts in regards to end user computing.
Not a gearhead, but I can carry my weight in the EUC space.

My dream job was back in the 1990s when I was a multimedia developer and we were building really innovative educational cd-roms. It was the only job I truly loved to the degree I spent a few marathon weekend binges working day and night. It was fun and we had developed a reputation for excellence.
All good things must come to an end though
and I took a new job at a fun startup in healthcare IT and while it pays the bills it's not the same.

Started off as a Data Center Sys Admin for a Fortune 1000 in Baton Rouge...then a few years at LSU.
Moved to IT Management for a digital media company first in San Francisco and got transferred out to New York.
Now, I'm currently a Cybersecurity Consultant, focusing on attack/pen and a lot of internal IT audits around security and data privacy with a Big 4, seeing a lot of fun stuff for a lot of Fortune 100's.

I work for an application company. We sell our application, aka not client based.

I currently hold the job I've wanted since I went to school for networking, however the pay isn't really up to par with market value. I really enjoy where I work and the people I work with, though, so it's a bit of a trade-off.
