Sooooooooo good. Was in line at 7:40am to make 8:30am Gondi start. Went until 11am when the lifts got a tiny bit congested then went back out at 2:00pm for some afternoon hot laps.
Heavy stuff but that's what we needed. So deep. Had to be 24" in some wind blown spots if not deeper.
I give it 4 of 5 stars just because the snow was a little heavy. Otherwise it was a 5* powder day.
I love the terrain at Steamboat. Not the steepest but kickers and booters eveywhere!
Getting sendy under the lift

Denver is a united hub. Daily flights from MSY nonstop
About a 90 min drive from airport to keystone, breck, winter park or copper mountain, a bit farther to vail.
I would always say breck for a first trip. Its a real town. Most places are just fake resorts. Fun even if you arent a bug skier.
Similar places
Aspen
Park City
Telluride
Steamboat

Beautiful day yesterday, turned to alpenglow a few minutes later.

Can't even imagine the alpenglow up in AK.
Made a run down at 4:00 as lifts close in Steamboat, turned a corner and the alpenglow stopped me in my tracks. It's almost otherworldly sometimes.
I love the mountains.

Yeah that was about 2:15 at Eaglecrest ski area. Low angle of the winter sun paints awesome colors on the way down

Looks like another big storm coming to the southern rockies with the majority of the action coming Thursday and Friday. My body is ready for more pow
On a side note, living in the front range and resort riding off the I-70 corridor is becoming something I increasingly hate more and more. 3 hour drives of 60 miles are the norm unfortunately, all the good snow gets skied off within a couple hours of lifts opening, and all the gapers are out in full force every weekend. Hoping it gets a little better as more terrain opens and becomes available. I would imagine this problem isn't as bad at Steamboat, you lucky fricker

Definitely a hundred times better here in the Boat. Lotta local powder hounds that like to get to the lines early for first tracks but once we all spread out, it's rarely too crowded. Especially once we open more and the whole mountain.
I70 is just too accessible. I don't blame any person who skis those resorts on the weekend. It's an affordable pass with a TON of options. And people love to ski or ride so they'll do what it takes.

I don't blame them either; I just wish they weren't there
Looks like I'll be making a Steamboat trip sometime in January and then for Winter Wondergrass. I'll definitely get in touch before I come out. My girlfriend's friend who moved that way is house sitting a mansion for her 4 month nursing contract so we should be able to party there in style

I'm an Epic Pass/I-70 warrior. Wish I could hit other resorts but it's simply a time issue with my work schedule.
This weekend is my first ski of the year. Supposed to be a ton of fresh pow Friday and Saturday.

My son and I are flying out to Denver on Saturday and then driving to Steamboat for a week. This will be our first time in Steamboat. Do you have any good restaurant recs that won't break the bank? Any kid friendly apres ski places that would have a good drink special with some appetizer deals for the kid? Steamboat BBQ seems to have some good reviews but being from the south I'm hesitant of what some locals would call good BBQ. I see there is a Moes there but I can drive half a mile here everyday and get that.
Looking forward to my first time in Steamboat.

I'll venmo you $5 to stay home
For reals though, have fun and shred hard
I'm riding backcountry or driving to Crested Butte to chase the (forecasted) best snow and avoid large crowds

Just heard today that Thunderhead Lodge has half price drafts from like 1:00-2:30, so that's something to keep in mind.
Lotta great happy hours downtown Steamboat.
Mambo Italiano
Happy Hour Daily 4-5:30
$3 drafts / $3 off glass pours of wine / 1/2 price specialty cocktails / $2 off appetizers / 1/2 price pizza / (dine-in only)
*good Italian place. Best value at happy hour.
Backdoor Grill
Happy Hour: Upstairs at the Bar, opens at 5pm to 7pm Daily, All night on Sundays
Deal: $5 Classic Burger, 50% off Drafts, $5 House Wines, App Specials
*it says upstairs but if you ask about it downstairs they usually will give it to ya. This is my go to spot for a quick easy burger. Really good specialty burgers if ya forgo the happy hour deal. Recommend Butcherknife Amputator for the "local" beer.
Johnny Bs is a diner kinda place with alcoholic milkshakes on special each day. Daily deals and early bird breakfast deal from 7am-9pm.
I'm less familiar with mountain side of town, but Slopeside and TBar are popular choices for apres.
Snow forecast looks really solid! Sounds like it will dump Wednesday/Thursday until Saturday morning so hopefully the roads are clear while you drive up. Then another storm system coming in 21st-25th.
Look forward to having y'all in Steamboat!

Park City food recs? Going next week.

I took my family there last season for spring break and we loved it. Place is huge now with it being connected to Canyons. Some of the family went to High West Distillery and Saloon and said it was really good, you can actually ski to it in town from the mountain. I was sick that day so I missed it. Squatters Roadhouse Grill was good as well, has something for everyone. Nothing else food wise really stood out to us.
Also if you want beer for your accommodations better than the standard bud light/coors stuff, you have to buy it at the state run liquor stores.

Thanks for the recs, will definitely have to try that burger special. Hopefully that storm second half of next week hits so I can throw the little man in ski school and I can get a powder day or two.
If you see a snowboarder in a white jacket/orange pants following a little dude on skis or in a restaurant with an Auburn hat on say hello. Always fun to run into an SEC fan on the mountains.

More terrain opening tomorrow that'll put us over 50% open. So great news on that front! Hopefully even more by time you get here.
Enjoy the town. Bright highlighter helmet with red jacket for me. Post on here with any other questions!

Other than mentioned above, Oishi Sushi is great. You also have to stop into No Name Saloon for a burger and a drink.
If you're looking to watch a game by chance, Collie's is the sports bar to hit.
