Really thinking ab Park City this year in February. I skied Breck last yr and loved the mountain and town. From reading this thread it sounds like Park City also has a good nightlife. I have never skied Utah. How does it compare to Colorado? I have skied winter park, Copper, and Breck. Any advice on places to stay or AIRBNB?

Lower elevation and less vert than most CO resorts, but still a really fun mountain with a ton of terrain to explore since it's connected with Canyons now. Town is awesome too.

Utah snow is also slightly heavier with a higher moisture content (snow water equivalent) than CO mountains. As storms come off the Pacific Ocean and cross the continent, each mountain range "rings out" moisture from the storm. By time storms reach the CO Rockies, they are pretty rung out, relative to the moisture and strength they came off the Pacific with. Add on top of that another round of orographic lifting at an even higher elevation in CO and you have lighter snow than out west, in general.

It's a little heavier, but when you get a good powder day on Utah snow -- it's hard to beat.

I'll take Steamboat's blower champagne, though.

I just bought "our" Christmas presents (a/k/a mid-life crisis palliative trip):

--30 days in MT/ID, in mid-Feb to mid-Mar (got early season major discount lift tix at various places--too bad no Epic-style passes out there; SkyMiles for my flight; sorta paid out of the booty for wife's flight. she's coming out for a week)

--2017 Rossi Super 7 HDs (major discount from "Canada," new on eBay--AmEx has my back if it happens to be a scam; fingers crossed)

--Marker Baron bindings (heel releases for sidecountry hikes but still a downhill-centric AT binding)

--Tecnica Cochise 130Pro Boots (killer walk mode for AT but mostly a downhill boot-- I got the very last pair of 2015s at backcountry.com and they happened [hopefully] to be my size--50%+ off)

--G3-Backcountry.com climbing skins

--new Marmot pants and Marker (same manufacturer as Marmot btw) NeoShell jacket (clearance/black friday at backcountry and sierra tp).

This is my first major equipment upgrade in 10 years, and this shite would've been over $2500 in a shop. I also used ebates for double cash back on Black Friday (10% at both backcountry and sierra tp). No lines or toddler-stomping.

Now I need to get my old arse in the gym so my meniscus/i doesn't fall off on day one! Oh, and snow. Pray for snow. Late season in the region, but snow is forecast every day next week.

Nice purchases there friend. I haven't ski'd the Super 7, but last years Soul 7 is my daily driver.

I also have some Marker Baron bindings on my 4frnt CRJs for side country missions.

Heard good things about the Cochise boots.

I almost bought last year's Super 7s at a serious discount a few months ago, but waited and they sold out. I was bummed until I saw the 2017 reviews. Apparently the carbon and basalt addition to the core make it an even better all-mountain ski.

I try to stay in the trees, in all but the worst mashed potatoes and always pray for powder of course. But I really want just one setup for all conditions, so I'm stoked. I'm also looking forward to a few hikes that I've never done at my local hill (Montana Snowbowl).

I hope I don't receive some pieces of bamboo w printouts of real super 7s glued to them.

Nice gear purchases. I upgraded boots and powder skis last season. Sold an old setup too, so still have a 3 setup quiver. Probably be several more years before I make any new gear purchases, barring theft or breaks/failures.

I guess I have three set-ups now, but I don't see myself using the old Dynastar carvers (they are pretty but heavy and sort of useless given the new tech) or park skis (the absurd-looking K2 Public Enemies).

I could've survived another season on the old stuff, but I decided life is too short, and it's far and away my favorite physically taxing activity. I love paddling, backpacking (and combining the two for packrafting) and mountain biking, but skiing is no. 1.

Also, I got over a major plateau last year even on a seriously bum knee. (After a solid 24 days skiing in MT/ID last season, we did a 4-day easter trip to CO--got 4-day A-basin/Key passes for like $160 + free stay at friend's condo and Delta companion pass-- and my wife had to help me to the car one day because I couldn't walk.) But before the knee rebelled, I had made strides skiing double blacks efficiently, gained speed in trees, and stamina in sidecountry, bowls, etc.

But my boots sucked (packed out, old and cold), and my skis just felt like they were fighting me (the "all-mountain" park skis--duh). All of my shells were worn out (again, cold...and wet), and my 15-year-old ski pants are way too big for me now. I feel justified in the upgrade! I think my meniscus will thank me.

So back to travel, I'm becoming a bargain-ski guru. I stopped buying season passes, because I like to go to different places besides our local hill (but it's still my overall favorite place to ski and drink and eat and drink--Montana Snowbowl). Between liftopia and craigslist, and random Epic deals, I've saved a shite ton of money on tix.

We are hitting up Lost Trail one weekend--when it has powder (which is often) it's hard to beat. We always do Silver Mountain in ID because we have a rental property there, and then Schweitzer is just a short jump north. They have a Sunday special for $25. I may take a side trip to Bridger and Big Sky. Last season, I had a season pass to Discovery ($200 midnight-special)--that's a great hill too. I can't remember the last time I stood in a lift line at these small places. I feel like I'm at Disney World when I go to the busy CO resorts. You pay for it (at the small, local places) with less consistent conditions and slow lifts though.

Good buddy of mine has the 2007 model of those still.

My park skis are the 2010 K2 Disorderly. Love em. They typically only get used 5-7 days a season though, which is good for their longevity. Groomer/park days if the off-piste snow isn't good or open yet.

I'm too old and wounded for the terrain park these days. But hopefully my new light skis will allow for a little air on some kickers.

Can't wait for some real terrain and real powder. Working until 1 today and going to grab some laps at Steamboat.

Gonna make a MT trip this year to see my brother in Bozeman. He's got a Bridger pass. Gonna try and ski both Bridger and Big Sky while I'm there.

Has anyone stayed at The Bivvi hostel in Breck before? What was your experience?

Wayyyyy better than a week or so ago. We have reported 12" for this storm so far, but I'd imagine (and from what I've heard from snowmakers and patrol) that there are some spots up top that have gotten 18"-24".

Gondola opened yesterday. Storms are lining up. Hopefully by mid-December we have a good bit of terrain open. Steamboat isn't super steep so most stuff should be filling in nicely.

I'll try and snap some pictures if it isn't cloudy and whiteout today.

Day #10 on the season today.

Haven't stayed at the Bivvi but I did quite a few ski rental deliveries there last year. Haven't seen the sleeping quarters but the common room and area is nice. Always bustling with young people.

I'd recommend based on my experience and the "vibe" I got from the place.

My first winter as a Steamboat local. I'm super stoked. Summer was awesome. Fell in love with the Yampa Valley, but I'm ready for some Steamboat powder this winter.

If you're renting, let me know. I'm working at Ski Butlers and would be happy to get ya on some skis.

bamafan, keep an eye out for Verne in the boat after the 12/10 Army-Navy game. Looks like he's riding off into the sunset in that direction.
