The Alaskan Fish House and Annabelle's. Pretty pricey places, but the rest of Ketchikan shopping wise is relatively cheap in comparison to Juneau and Skagway.

Where would you recommend eating in Ketchikan? We walked what felt like not even a tenth of a mile and the town seemed to end. There was just nothing there to see and I don't recall seeing more than a small little cafe type place to eat. Is there somewhere secret?

i think my wife and i just went to some local bar in ketchikan and the bartender was running for mayor or something random like that. its a small town, and really the only thing to do is wander around for an hour or 2. there are excursions offered but i dont think anything noteworthy. you might be better off just staying onboard an taking advantage of a less crowded ship.

We are on Celebrity Infinity, leaving June 4th out of Vancouver.

I don't know how the poster walked around Ketchikan for 2 hours. I swear we walked it in 15 minutes. lol It was kind of raining so maybe we turned back earlier than I thought but I remember walking to the end of a road that went up a steep hill and deciding not to walk up it. Maybe there was more if we walked up the hill.

We did not go out of our way to explore the fine dining scene in Ketchikan if there is such a thing, but the Cape Fox Lodge has a nice restaurant overlooking the town and the harbor. This is the hotel on top of the hill. It is a short and scenic stroll from the cruise ship.

Go flightseeing if you can. Cruises are a poor way to see "Alaska" and you'll see a small part of the State. Cruise ships present huge limitations.

I get tired of people saying this. I don't take a cruise to see Alaska, or any place. That is a perk and it's nice to go to a new place or two or three new places but everyone knows you only get a few short hours in each port. The actual cruise is the reason for the vacation. I love being on a cruise, drinking all I want, taking in some entertainment, people watching...and then seeing a few new places. The scenery on an Alaskan cruise is also something you can't get anywhere else in the world. Sailing the Inside Passage is amazing and something you wouldn't experience if you were stuck inland to really see Alaska. It is also a great way to see if you may want to take a "real" vacation to some places. For example, I would love to come back to Alaska and stay in Alaska for a week. I know that from cruising there. I also know you couldn't pay me to go back to the Bahamas and I know that from cruising there.

It's true.

Most of the really awesome areas are only accessible by flight or small craft. I'm not saying that cruising is not a good way to see part of the State, I'm just saying it's low on the experience side compared to spending a few weeks poking around bays and inlets, or flying to remote inland area.

A flightseeing trip would enhance the cruise experience as much or more than any other shore excursion IMO

Because you are working on this assumption that people take cruises just to see Alaska (or wherever the cruise goes). For a select few, perhaps, but why pay all that money to only see a few ports for a few hours if your intention is to really see Alaska? I get what you are saying but people who go on cruises are not actually coming back and telling people they went and vacationed in Alaska...they say they took an Alaskan cruise.

I get it. I just think a flightseeing trip would enhance the trip immensely.

Roger would you suggest hiking the Harding Ice Field Trail or taking a guided glacier hike at Exit Glacier? (is it worth the 130 per person to strap on crampons)? Already taking a 6 hour cruise into the kenai fjords national park.

I'd catch a ride to the glacier and hike around on your own. It's been a few years but it used to be pretty easy to hike up to and hike upon. The ice field trail is pretty cool if you have time.

Solo or with a guide? Above And Beyond Alaska does guided hikes/kayak trips there. You can do it solo via yak or trail though lots of tourist have to get rescued off the trails.

In winter(best time imo) you can just hike across the lake.

They are definitely worth your time. vid

I'd rather do a guided hike there. Any suggestions on who to use?

I can also use my AllTrails app to navigate so I don't get lost. My only concern is that we have a Taku Lodge Excursion from 12:30-4:00pm and the ship leaves at 9:15pm.

Yeah the excursion will probably keep you from the ice caves. Contact ABAK

Their shortest trip is 6.5 hours, kayak and hike. Maybe do the evening Taku Glacier excursion?

Several other places on the US/Canada border too. There seemed to be some sort of contest going on. It was surprising.

In Skagway we rented 2 cars since we had a large family group. I liked the flexibility compared to the train. And it gave us time to see the old Dyea site which had a nice short hike with salmon in the stream and bears.

Ketchican we just rented bikes and rode above town and to where the totem poles are.

I like Dyea. The snow slide cemetery, brown bears etc. it's a gorgeous setting.

My trip was INCREDIBLE. Holy crap. We had a balcony and the views the entire time were like something from lord of the rings-but better! Everyone should put an Alaskan cruise on their bucketlist. Every single day my mind was blown! Absolutely georgeous.
