Best place to snow ski in January?

I know other months are popular but it’s for a special birthday.
I see Utah has high snow ratings for January?
I’ve only been to Colorado and Switzerland.
ETA: Went with Big Sky, MT. We’ll see!

It depends on the year.
Snow is inconsistent. Utah had very little snow fall last year for example. I would look at the resorts, and see what looks interesting to you. Where would you like to be.
If you're booking a last minute trip, then go wherever the snow is good.

Wait until December.
It will highly depend on conditions. If you want tons of snow, go to Washington or BC.

Had a few powder days in January at Crystal last year, think it was 16" overnight the one good goaround. But it was also wet powder so if you're wanting the fluffy stuff maybe OP needs to go elsewhere

I've skied at Mt Baker a few times, and the conditions were awesome.
But I wouldn't make expensive plans without knowing what the conditions will be in a particular winter.

Hmmm…
We will for sure go January 2-7.
I’m looking at Snowbird Utah right now.
What resorts should I check out?

What type of terrain will your group be skiing? If it’s just regular stuff, pick a place that everyone wants to go to. Unless it’s a really bad year, everywhere will have all their front side groomers open by Jan.

Just FYI, Google “Interlodge conditions” at Alta and Snowbird

Does that happen a lot there?
What’s different about Snowbird than other places regarding interlodges?

Just the wife and I.
I’m more advanced but she’s never been so she will spend most of the time on the greens.

I recommended this in the other thread... Beaver Creek’s new expansion is mainly all greens. Plus it’s Beaver Creek so everything is nice (think Vail on a much smaller scale). Even if your wife hates skiing, she can find something to do.
Eta: there’s a Hyatt in BC that’s very nice (I stayed there this summer). Hyatt has some great reward point redemption potential since the reward point requirements don’t change. In BC, it’s 25k points per night, roughly $375/night for you CSR Card holders. Cash price is ~$1k during ski season. It’s easily the best credit card point redemption in all CO.

I’m also looking at Big Sky.
Not trying to break the bank though.
First place I saw was $6,000 for 5 nights.

some friendly unsolicited advice... Do not teach her to ski. Have someone else do that.

The snow in Utah will likely be better than CO in January.
I personally wouldn’t go to Snowbird if your wife is a green skiier. That place has some bitchin hard terrain and the people who ski there are fricking insan, zooming around at insane speeds everywhere. It has a very distinct vibe based on my visits there. We are fairly advaned skiiers and felt like amateurs at Snowbird, not to mention I thought I was going to get run over about 5 times there (usually feel like this 0-1 times in a typical day skiing in CO).
Brighton, Solitude, Deer Valley, PC would all be great. You can stay in SLC if you’re on a budget, thats the best value for housing on a skiing vacation in America.

Jackson Hole or Grand Targhee, you could even do both if you wanted to.
Big Sky may also be ok depending on what you like to ski but that is like some of the CO resorts where you may want to wait it out a bit longer, the mountain is very rocky if you want more advanced terrain it needs good coverage. But if you want blues and easier blacks, I am sure it and most resorts would be fine.
