I took wife, kids 2 and 3.5 to Disney in January. We flew from MSY to MCO. Drove to MSY from BR.

By the time we: drove to MSY, got on plane, flew to MCO and got bags, got in private car (for the carseats) drove to on site hotel...

It took almost as long as driving within an hour or so. Plus had to deal with the humanity at the airports, masks on toddlers, etc

Next time will drive. Can stop/eat when I want, no security lines, masks, airport bullshite.
For you and 12 hours though with older kids than mine, I would fly.

While I somewhat agree with the sentiment, the time comparison varies by more than an hour or so.

You're looking at an 11 hour drive from Baton Rouge. Lets say you only stop three times and one time is for a meal, let's assume an hour and half total of stoppage time, you're looking at 12-12.5 hours.

A direct flight from MSY to MCO is around 1:45 so assuming you had a 9am flight from MSY you would have to leave BR around 6am or so for an 7:30 arrival at MSY.

6 departure from BR
9am - 10:45 flight (forgetting about time zone loss here for a minute)
10:45 - 11:15 baggage claim
11:15 - 11:45 car rental pickup
11:45 - 12:45 travel to your Disney resort

You should be closer to 7 hours or so if travel time to fly vs 12 hours or so if driving.

A couple things I’d consider and I’ve done a lot of 12-15 hour trips with kids to Illinois to see family.

Fly if it increases your time. Catch a 8am direct and be at the pool by noon? Fly.

If you are flying on a Saturday you’d already be off work and the flight is around noon and can’t do a direct flight and it still takes all day, then why?

Orlando airport sucks and honestly I’ve been dissapointed in Disney’s airport service but I’ve only used it odd times. But it took a lot longer than expected.

I prefer to pack the car before, wake up at 4am, drive, and get in by dinner time and give the kids time to run around. Later bed time but everyone goes to bed at a decent time and keeps normal sleep schedules.

Lastly, I know driving around thanksgiving sucks but man im not sure if ever fly around thanksgiving unless you absolutely had to.

1. Thankfully, our girls are college age and we don't have to do Disneyworld (or Disneyland) anymore. That being said,

2. The only way to go with children (unless you live on the Florida peninsula) is to FLY, STAY ON-SITE, and RENT A CAR WHILE THERE.

3. Fly, because 8, 9, 10, 12 hours in a car is far too long for kids, even with tablets, laptops, games etc. for kids. And this idea of Dad driving all damn night while everyone else sleeps is an undue burden on the dad (me). Screw that crap.

4. Stay on-site because (a) it's a better experience with better perks (extended hours, etc.) and (b) you are closer to the various parks in Disney. Easier in, easier out, which becomes a big deal at nap time and at the end of the day, or when you just want to take a break from the parks and chill at the hotel pool. Also, staying on-site gives you free parking at the various lots for each theme park, which leads to:

5. Get your own rental car. Yeah, if you are at Contemporary, Grand Floridian, or Polynesian you are a short monorail ride away from the Magic Kingdom, and if you are at Wilderness Lodge you are a short boat ride away. But to get everywhere else (Disney Hollywood Studios, EPCOT, Animal Kingdom, the Disney water parks, or Disney Springs/Downtown Disney), you are pretty much riding a Disney bus, which I found to be a crowded, time consuming, aggravating mess, full of cranky screaming kids and worn out parents lugging strollers. Also, you can use the car to go visit Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure, which our kids loved as much as Disney.

Just got back from Disney, wife plus 2 girls (2 and 8). Our third trip, had a great time. I know this board hates it, but my girls are into princesses and it’s a magical experience for them.

I was amazed at how many LA people were there, LSU was by far the most represented fanbase by a large margin fwiw

Just booked our direct flights yesterday for July. I've got a 5 year old and a 2 year old. DW is about 15 hours from us in a car one way. I would have paid double for those plane tickets.

Having to stop every 30 minutes for someone to pee or bc someone is hungry/crying/fussing just sucks. And then after a long exhausting trip in the hot Florida sun to have to drive back 15 hours.. frickin shoot me.

Depends on if you are in a hurry to have your kids groomed or want to have a lot of time to think about it on the way.

So Disney doesn’t offer the Magical Express anymore. It used to be stupid easy. Drop your luggage off at your origin airport, then when you get to Orlando you go downstairs to the Disney bus and they take you right to your resort. Your luggage will be in your room.

We went in Dec and they stopped the luggage service. Which was a tremendous pain in the arse hauling all that thru a busy airport with two kids. Now they don’t offer the bus service at all, so I don’t know if I’d fly again.

Disney used to be a great “I don’t have to put effort” vacation. Now it’s fricking exhausting. Travel, wake up early to book rides, constantly on the app to move reservations, parks are fricking packed, etc.
