Leave Monday. Haven't been in many years. It'll be a Viking River Cruise, then we'll add a week on the backend, renting a car at the airport and driving to Normandy, basing in Bayeux.

I tend to obsess about everything. Watch travel videos and live streams in Paris to see what people wear, weather conditions etc. Looks like it's fairly cool, sometimes rainy. You notice men predominantly tend to wear sneakers, like Adidas. Jeans, but pretty fancy types. Few wear any kind of hat or cap. Lot of black clothing. "Poofy jackets" etc. I assume, like a New York City, people may tend to dress a little more stylishly than other parts of the country. Trying to watch a few videos on YouTube and SkillShare to at least get some basic conversational phrases down.

Any recent experiences there? Observations, or recommendations on "must do's" (yeah, it's one of the most popular places in the world, so things like the Louvre or Eiffel Tower are obvious).

Hope to provide some pictures and/or trip updates along the way since this board has been so valuable for travelers. Paying it forward as it were.

Thank you for all you share and do here. It's appreciated!

This. Also consider visiting WWI battlefields if that’s your thing. Visiting the Somme was well worth the trip. Easy drive.

I’ve heard the river crises are having issues this year with the low water. Some people I met in Switzerland said they had to get off at one port, get on a bus with their luggage and go to another port & ship to keep going down river because the ships couldn’t pass in some areas.

I’m sure it will be a good time regardless, just passing along.

Safe and fun travels!

Yeah, some of that was experienced on the Rhine and Danube this year in certain spots.

The Seine is fine though. We double checked!

I try to do this to avoid looking as much like a tourist...but they are going to know you are a tourist I assure you.

Yes, they definitely dress much more stylish and pretty much all of Europe they wear "fancy" sneakers and slacks/jeans etc. They dress up for daily activities, never wear regular running sneakers or shorts.

How long are you actually in Paris?

PARIS & THE HEART OF NORMANDY

Paris (2 days) > La Roche-Guyon (1 day) > Rouen (2 days) > Les Andelys (1 day) > Paris (2 days)

Note: There are tours to Normandy while in Rouen. But, as noted, we are driving back and spending more time in the region after the cruise ends.

I similarly used to sort of obsess about “not looking like a tourist” type thoughts when traveling to places like Europe. It then occurred to me how ridiculous I would think it, if I would run into European tourists here who were trying really hard to “look like” Americans.

Fact is, people from different places have differing styles and that’s okay. I generally make an effort not to look like a schlub in places where looking like a schlub is deemed not appropriate, and I just generally make some effort to do so wherever I am, but beyond that, I’m not going to overthink trying to “blend in” when traveling oversees because I realize I’m more likely to look sillier than just being myself.

One of the best trips I ever had. Grabbed a long weekend ahead of a business trip to London. Make sure you visit the British cemetery in Bayeux, and bring some tissues for the tears. The personal messages on the gravestones broke my heart.
