They're rebuilding a bridge. The detour may be a wagon road. Plan accordingly

A longer detour, but both peaceful, more beautiful and a much safer road would be I-26 north from Asheville to Johnson City TN.

It might be worth taking a detour through the mountains. I did that several times when that section was blocked by rock slide.
