Seeing the Northern lights and seeing the country of Iceland are really two different trips. You should pick one. You don't need 8 to 10 days to see the Northern lights.
Random question...so sounds like seeing the northern lights is more of a long weekend trip. If so, is there somewhere else that is cheaper/quicker to get that northern lights experience ie somewhere in Canada, and then do a bigger 12 day summer trip to Iceland?

Recently read a post/article about Northern Lights and the author said that going to Fairbanks increased the odds of seeing them and at cheaper cost.

We actually just did an Alaskan cruise 3 weeks ago. Flew into Anchorage early in order to go up to Fairbanks and see the lights. Unfortunately there was severe cloud coverage and we weren’t able to see them and couldn’t stay additional days because we had to get on the cruise ship.

My daughter and her friend are going at the end of May. They are going for 12 days and doing the ring road but they are renting a travel van. Seem to be a great idea and somewhat cheaper but like everyone has said Iceland is not cheap.

Iceland is interesting at many levels. I had access to locals through business; it is otherwise hard to have personal interaction with the locals. Icelanders are cordial but most don't engage with tourists at a personal level. Many hospitality workers are internationals.
I've heard that LINK is a tour company that takes a more personal approach. They have self-guided activities.
The total population is only about 400,000. There is lots of elbow room.
