Flying into Tokyo.
Taking bullet train to Kyoto
Taking train to Shin-Fuji the day before
I’ll stay there the night and do Fuji on day 3 after sunrise.

Rephrase this? I'm having a hard time following your travel timeline.

I absolutely 1000% want to do Fuji. That’s my only must.

So do it. We hiked mt Fuji on our honeymoon. It was a highlight of my life. Truly. Some thoughts:

1. We acclimated in Tokyo for 2 nights before taking bus to the trail head to start our Fuji hike.

2. It’s a very easy hike. Mostly just like walking up a big hill to be honest. There are a lot of people on the trail, most of them Japanese. It is wonderful to meet and chat with people. We met a group of women, three generations, climbing together. It’s like partaking in a national hajj for the Japanese identity. Weather, of course, is the wildcard.

3. Book a night at the highest hut you can. Arrive in time for dinner. It’s a long communal house above the clouds. Just an incredible place to sit. Get up around 2:00 am to summit for sunrise. If you get a clear day, the entire empire of Japan lays before you. Bring a headlamp. Will you see snakes of lights slithering up the mountain above and below you as you summit.

4. After sunrise we walked the rim, hiked down the Kyoto side of the mountain to a different bus station, took the bus the Shinkansen and went on to Kyoto and stayed a few nights in a ryokan.

5. The circle K and Lawson convenience stores sell these awesome rice ball snacks that are great trail food.

10 out of 10 would do that trip again and hope to with my daughters one day.

But you really have to view it as a cultural experience and embrace that aspect fully. As a pure outdoor adventure it won’t measure up to countless mountain you could summit in America.

And as someone else said, go sit naked in a natural onsen when you are done.

My wife isn’t going to top of Fuji. This is for me. I’m gonna go back later. 4 + 4 days

So if I understand you, you are splitting Japan into two short trips, one with the wife and one solo?

Trip with wife - Osaka - Kyoto - Kyoto - Kyoto - Osaka
Solo Trip - Tokyo - Tokyo - Tokyo - Fuji - Tokyo

I am probably going to do Japan for 4-5 days as well in May. Great to see the suggestions. I know it's a short time but I either go now or don't do until I am 50.

How many days would be appropriate?

Are you coming from New Orleans?

I wouldn't do less than 10.

I will also suggest the shimanami kaido bike trail to anyone who will listen. We did it from onomichi to imabari. Visited the dogo onsen in matsuyama after and then took the jet ferry back across the seto inland sea to Hiroshima.

Japan’s public transit just open up so many different options of things to do if you have the time.

I think you should go all out and just turn the Fuji hike into a full on vertical pub crawl. Smash drinks and a few snacks at each station. Soak up the scenery in between.

You should probably drink at least one Strong Zero per hour of the hike. It’s a popular Japanese remedy for muscle pain. I guarantee you won’t feel a thing by the time you get a few of them down.
