Would you fly into Miami and then rent a car and drive through the keys
Went last January and few into EYW and then drove to MIA for the flight back to MSY...was sort of the best of both worlds.
Flying into Key West is super easy and is a nice way to hit the ground running. Cab/shuttle downtown is about 15 mins, so you'll be checked in and onto your plans within the hour.
Flying out of MIA allows the gorgeous drive up Hwy 1. We stopped in Islamorada for lunch at Morada Bay (the Netflix series Bloodline was filmed on site here). There was a little anxiety to make sure the rental didn't get into a fender bender once into Miami on the way to the airport but it was still a nice drive.

Also how many days would be enough? 3? 4?
I think 3 nights are enough for typical downtown stuff but an extra day for an excursion/boat day would be nice. (NOLA snowstorm cut our trip to Mile O Fest down to 2 nights and it certainly felt rushed...but now we have a reason to go back!)

Yeah $600 a day is very reasonable. Thanks for the info

My biggest advice is to rent a golf cart while you are there. Although most of Key West is close together, it’s nice being able to get places quick and easy.

Horrible alternative IMO. The drive is fun for like 15 minutes.

Depends on your plans. In January there is Mile Zero Fest which is lots of fun. Overall February costs more than January, but the weather improves and getting out on the water is more enjoyable. February is a bit more crowded, but not necessarily in a bad way.

the drive from Miami is part of the reason to go to the keys. Do 2 nights in marathon and 2 nights in key west
That drive is miserable. Marathon is a good place to get out on the water from, but there’s not much there.

A golf cart is quick for rental purposes but it drives (rules of the road) and parks the same as a car. You just set soaked if it rains. If you have personal mobility issues uber is faster because of the parking.

day is plenty. Take a cruise that includes a port of call at Key West. You can walk from one side of the island and back and stop off at a few of places along the way
That gives you just enough time to buy a t-shirt at Sloppy Joes and tell everyone you have seen it all. There’s definitely more to experience than a brief cruise ship stop.
