London, Cotswolds and maybe Stonehenge? In 7 days

We have a flight in and out of London. My wife wants to stay in the Cotswolds during the middle of the trip with a couple nights in London (beginning and end). I don’t want to rent a car. What are the best villages to visit, are there other places in the area that are musts and would we be able to manage a day trip to Stonehenge from London or the Cotswolds by train or a tour group?

I've been to 41 countries in my life, and Stonehenge is, by far, the most overrated attraction I've seen. I was a 15-minute drive away in Salisbury, and that drive was still a waste of my time.

If I remember Moreton-in-Marsh is where the train stops in the Cotswolds or in Oxford. Getting around has always been a crap shoot. The buses don’t always run on the published schedule. You can hire private cars to take you. Waking is good for in town but the distance between towns is usually too far. For us anyway.

You could do much better by visiting Oxford

The Cotswolds is a pretty rural area, without driving or being in a car or on a tour you don't really see it.
You could maybe ride the local buses to get the feeling of it but they are slow and not particularly romantic.
As to train travel, see the map below, I wouldn't consider that a way to effectively see the Cotswolds.
Take a train from London to Oxford. Rent a car there for two or three days and return the car there.
If you are totally set against driving, there are motor coach tours available daily in Oxford to visit the Cotswolds.
I've never used them so I won't link to any of them here.
You could stay somewhere central like around Bourton-on-the Water, and drive out from there daily or stay in Oxford and drive over every day.
If I had to pick the most picturesque village I've seen in the Cotswolds, it's Bibury.
That's less than one hour's drive due West of Oxford.
Then you could circle back towards Oxford from there.
Lacock Abbey Link and Avebury Link are to the south from Bibury, and a bunch of Cotswold-y towns are north of Bibury.
Just north of Oxford is-
Blenheim Palace Website Link
Visit nearby Bladon to see the Churchill's grave.

I'll be in London in the next couple of weeks and staying near Hyde Park. Have a tour planned for Stonehenge but I'll be there for 8 days total. Also debating renting a car just to drive and see more of the countryside.

What may be a waste to you may be something else for others. I've heard people talk about certain aspects of travel are pointless or that they may be a waste and I've found them to be intriguing

What about Stonehenge makes it so overrated?
Not doubting, just curious

Maybe the folks who didn't enjoy it were "Spinal Tap" fans?

I love visiting England.
There’s some recent London-based threads here with lots of recommendations.
Here’s mine: My favorite painter is JMW Turner, the largest collection of his works is held at the Tate Britain Millbank (Link)
Admission is free.
Ask away if you have any more questions.

Stonehenge is worth seeing as part of a trip to Salisbury. I wouldn’t travel 3 hours out of my way just to see it.

I was in the Cotswolds for a weekend earlier in the month. Wife's cousin and her husband live in London, so we got a big house outside Banbury for the weekend with their friends. Was a lot of fun. Massive hangover, but there are quite a few pubs and shops in Banbury. We were also able to walk to Balscote, which is a tiny town with a single pub. It was an awesome spot, though. We sat there for a few hours.
On our way back to London, we stopped at Daylesford Farm. Worth a go, for sure, and your wife would love it. They have a fantastic market, home goods store and a couple restaurants.
Taxis aren't impossible in the Cotswolds, depending where you are, but you'd be better-served staying in a larger town if you don't want to rent.

We always stayed in London and would take the train/bus line wherever we wanted.
one route we did was
Oxford
Stratford Upon Avon
Blenheim Palace
I always liked going to Warwick castle but I have heard it has gotten commercial now. Its one of the finest Medieval castles i have seen
We also liked going over to Windsor and Eton
Never had a bad trip to the UK

It's smaller than you think. You can't touch the stones or get very close to them. There's a highway right there, so there's no ambience or opportunity for peaceful reflection. And I think it costs a ridiculous 20 pounds or so.

Diddly Squat Farm Shop in Chadlington is a must.
