However, I'd carve out time for pitchers at the Terrace at Memorial Union

I take it from the post, but just confirming, the public can go to the Union and do this? Will be in Thursday-Sunday for the Alabama game. Thoughts on Harvey House for dinner Thursday? Think we’ve zeroed in on Settle Down for Friday.

Friday day drinking at Memorial Union right on waterfront if weather is nice

Definitely recommend this as the setting, vibe, union, and lakeside scenery is beautiful (nature and otherwise). At least for one or two pitchers of Spotted Cow. Great way to ease into the weekend.

I was never an official union member after graduating and never got asked for my union membership when ordering beer when I'd go back for football games. That said, I did just find this:

Two forms of ID are required to purchase alcohol: one for Wisconsin Union membership and one for proof of age.

They've been giving out one-day membership cards recently. Got one recently, actually, after Great Taste because I forgot mine at home. Anyone will be fine with their ID.

What are the best areas to stay in to walk to food/bars?

Madison is now in my work territory so I’ll be visiting there in the near future.

Awesome! Truly, it doesn't get much better than Madison for a mid-sized city. Difficult to find places whose downtown is, literally, on an isthmus.

Anyway, would just stay in the immediate downtown area around campus / Capitol Square. Everything is walking distance, which is great. To give you a few quick examples, I'm thinking Hilton Garden Inn Madison Downtown (my personal go-to), Hampton Inn & Suites Madison / Downtown, Embassy Suites by Hilton Downtown (just opened), Hilton Madison Monona Terrace, AC Hotel, etc., etc.). Moxy and Hotel Indigo are about ~15 minutes walking from the Square, so those aren't bad options, either.

I just talked with someone at the Memorial Union and they said you can purchase a one-day membership for $1 at the bar

Yup, just found this:

It’s true that the Wisconsin Union is a membership organization, but anyone can visit with a day, annual or lifetime membership. You can learn more about lifetime and annual membership here or purchase a $1 one-day membership at Memorial Union restaurants and cafés.

Honestly, nothing more UW-Madison than a pitcher of beer at the Terrace by the lake on a (early) fall Friday or Saturday, potentially with live music, the smell of the grill going and boats passing by. So great.

It is. We used to meet down there for group projects, someone would buy a pitcher of beer, and the books would never come out of our bags

If you're coming from downtown it's an awesome walk to come down state street, walk across Library Mall, and then through the Union to the Terrace.

Then swing by the base of Bascom Hill on your way back.

Appreciate the tips! I couldn’t find the day pass price on their site. Any idea if that’s a thing still?

Nvm. Found it :)

I love Madison! Heading up in a few weeks for the IM 70.3. This will be the 3rd year of doing it.

We're hitting Napoli 15 for dinner on Friday night before the race. Last year we did State Street Brats after the race to recover. Watched half of the WSU / WI game there. Lucille is pretty solid as well.

The terrace at the union is awesome as mentioned. Sat there with a few pitchers of beer last year people watching. Some college rap group came on stage with 2 singers and a posse of like 8 white kids wearing backpack and awkwardly supporting them. It was absolutely awful. Not because it was rap, just because of the complete lack of talent and self awareness. The mass exodus of families leaving was quite comical as they took the stage.

I'd live in Madison June-September if I could.

Pretty sure Phil Longo is a Naples 15 regular with his family. Maybe you'll see him there

Are you an IM participant, or cheering on someone?

Forecast saying mid 80s and partly sunny tomorrow, so a glorious day for those making the trip to Madtown for the game. Those going make sure to come back here and report on your travels, or shite, start a thread on the OT.

Did Lucilles for lunch last Friday and Naples 15 for dinner. Naples 15 is good, but probably a bit too expensive for what it offers. Lucille very good.

Dinner, beers, and cheese curds Saturday after the Ironman at the Tipsy Cow. That's a great spot.

We stayed at the brand new Embassy Suites near Lake Moana.

Madison is such a cool city. I wish it wasn't so far from Kansas. That drive has worn us out after 3 straight trips up.

I'll be back again in the future! Maybe we can connect!
