Love the board. I see when I search that several people said their favorite spot has been New Zealand. About 2 weeks ago Delta ran a crazy sale for 40k sky pesos round trip. Booked it and because it is on an A350 they bought from Latam I was able to use my global upgrades to move to Delta One. Hell of a deal.

Flying into Auckland in December with the wife (no pics). I would love any recommendations on routes, places to visit, restaurants, and anything to see. I have to say I travel a ton but had never contemplated NZ until the sale.

Thanks in advance!

A week there is exactly what I had, traveling with my daughter and niece. You can't begin to try to see everything, so I concentrated in the Southern Alps.

I rented a car, and that would be my suggestion as well. Driving on the left is a challenge until you get used to it, but believe me, it's much easier doing it on wide-open roads in New Zealand than on little narrow lanes in England.

You will be going at the end of spring, and I was there in early March, so the grass that is brown in my pics will be green in yours.

New Zealand has a number of mountain huts, and we hiked up near Mt. Cook to the Mueller Hut to spend the night. We had rented some sleeping bags and bought some freeze-dried food in Queenstown, as the hut is a communal dorm type of accommodation.

So this was how we spent two days.

Lake on the way to the hike near Mt. Cook

Halfway up, looking back down

Finally, the hut appears in the distance

There was a kea hanging around the hut. Keas are the world's only alpine parrot.

The sunrise was most incredible I have ever experienced. I have several other dazzling pics of that sunrise

One more of the view on the way down the next day:

Bookings at the Mueller Hut, as with many other popular mountain huts, book up well in advance.

Thanks a ton! I will scope these out. I am going driving on the opposite side. I have been to Scotland and Ireland 5 times. I agree that it took some time to get used to.

After the hike up Mt. Cook, we headed south and stopped in Te Anau to see the glow worm cave. I loved it. There are several of these in New Zealand. This is a web photo, not mine, but it gives you a good idea what it's like.

From there we took a boat out into Milford Sound. Some people get stunning views of the Sound, but we ended up there in rain, which is very frequent. Google some pics if you want to see what its like in clear weather, but we still an amazing experience. I don't know if this pic can convey what's happening, but the wind is picking up the water from the waterfalls all over the Sound and throwing it back up.

New Zealand has ten "Great Walks." The Milford Trek has the highest demand, and it books up very far in advance. We were unable to do it, so we did the Routeburn Trek. Because it's a one-way trek, we paid a service to drive our rental car from the trailhead to the end of the trail.

Most people do this hike in three days, but we only had two, so that made for a very intensive hike the second day. Absolutely exhilarating.

We started near the coast and hiked inland. That means going from temperate rainforest over the mountains into a much more typical forest.

It rained most of the first day, but that's still stunning.

We spent the night at the hut at Lake Mackenzie:

The next day, we hiked over the mountains:

Harris Lake at the top of the saddle.

We only did the South Island but would recommend a wine tour in Otago. Not just for the wine but the incredible scenery and different landscapes while you’re drinking it. Pinot is their thing.
