Haha it makes sense doesn't it? That buying it from the source would be a better product for sure. We definitely do not plan on missing it. McMenamins looks really neat, thanks for that suggestions.
How many days should we plan along the coast, or say, you had 11 nights to spend - flying in and out of Portland - with 2 young kids - how would you spend that time for a family whose never been to OR. We aren't looking to hop somewhere new everyday - tentatively we have 1 day east of Portland (Hood River maybe? Should this be 2 nights? We're arriving light, so the first night is essentially a wash), 3 nights in Bend, 1 at Crater Lake, 1 at Yachats, 2 in Newport, and 3 in Cannon Beach.
Really appreciate the comments from you and LSUintheNW!

If you get their late, you could make a the second day a "recovery day" in Hood River. Like I said, you can paddle board in the Columbia River and watch the windsurfers. They'll probably be all over the water.
Hood River is a small town and it won't take long to get anywhere. Its a straight shot one hour east of Portland on I-84. You might want to check out Multnomah Falls if you stay in Hood River. It's a 600 foot waterfall and you can see it as you're driving by and it doesn't take long to stop and hike up to the bridge to take pictures.
There are several wine vineyards and tasting rooms in town. You could also go up to Mt Hood and Timberline Lodge. Great place for lunch.
Make sure you cross the river into White Salmon, WA. The view back across the river is spectacular. You can't actually see the mountain from the town of Hood River (forest for the trees and all). Here is your view from the WA side of the river.
I mentioned Cove Palisades, which is just a little bit out of your way, when driving between Hood River and Bend. This is Smith Rock.
This is Pelican Brewing. It's a restaurant, a brewery, and a beach trip all in one

Are you visiting Hood River before heading to Bend or vice versa?

. I love to hike, but our kids are a little small (we do have a backpack carrier for our littlest), so any easier hiking ideas would be great.
When/if you stop at Multnomah falls don’t do the hike to the top. The view is terrible.
Instead, enjoy the view and drive a short distance to the Horsetail Falls hike and go to at least Ponytail falls which you walk behind. Your 5 year old can make it.
If you keep going you can see Triple falls. Your 5 year old may not have that in them but you can decide that.
There are multiple waterfalls along historic highway 30 you can view from the road.

We'll be going to Hood River and then onto Bend.

Thanks for those recommendations Jax - we'll try to hit each one!

If you want to see waterfalls, consider Silver Falls State Park. It has a bunch of great waterfalls (some hiking required) and can be a stop on the way to Bend as an alternative to the gorge/Hood River.
Oregon has some great state parks - probably better than any other state.
Also, just across the coastal border in California is Jebediah Smith State Park which is one of the best places to see Giant Redwoods up close. I think that's where they filmed the Ewok scenes in Return of the Jedi. The southern part of the Oregon Coast - Samuel Boardman corridor is great too but doesn't get the same attention and crowds as the northern part.

Definitely stop at Trillium lake on your way to Bend. Hopefully when you drive that way it’s a weekday.
So many tourists have discovered it and I’ve seen the road to the lake backed up a mile and I’ve turned around and skipped it.
I always go for a quick view when I’m out that way and I’ve seen it many many times but it just that beautiful of a view to not stop.
I always go over Mt. Hood on my way to Bend because the alternate route (I5, highway22/20) has little to no passing lanes with just ok views of the mountains until you get to Sisters.
However, if you decide to take the Highway 20 route on the way back I highly suggest going to Big lake, it’s just a few minutes drive off the highway, and seeing the best view of Mt. Washington there is imo.
Also, if you take that route coming back you can stop by Silver Falls state park, as mentioned previously, and see more waterfalls.

We've seen this mentioned a bunch and will definitely try to see it - thanks! Not exactly sure how we're going to plan that first night (or two). I know we're staying on the east side of Portland, but I'm not sure if we go all the way to Hood River or not. We've thought about staying just out Portland that first night and then waking up and making the drive on 84 to Hood River and seeing the sights along the Columbia River Gorge and then staying in Hood River that night before going onto Bend.
We've also talking about going straight to Hood River and backtracking some that next day to see Wahclella Falls (and other TBD sights ha). And we've also talking about just staying east of Portland and waking up and going straight to Bend along 26 and missed the Gorge all together (I don't really want to do this though.... but I also hate to backtrack to much.

I don't believe we'll be going this way. When we leave Bend we'll probably take 97 down and making our way across to Florence, but I'll keep in mind in case we do decide to go that route!

Am I learning this in spades - insane the amount of different parks I've read about that seem awesome. Makes me wonder why we choose to live in MS haha.

Any recommendations for Bend (or the area in general?). We love italian food and breweries and good views. Also looking for good things to do with the kids. (2 & 5).
Sorry to just get back to you but Bend with small children really isn’t my forte. I’m 47 with no kids and kind of a ski bum.
For Italian/French pasta - go to Bosa. It isnt really family friendly though. More like fine dining.
So just get pizza with the kids at Pizza Mondo downtown.
To play, stay along the Deschutes river around Farewell Bend Park. You can rent canoes for your family. The water is slow around those parts and everyone will be out there soaking up the sun.
Your family will be also very comfortable shopping and dining in the Old Mill District of Bend. Maybe you could even catch a live show at Hayden Amphitheatre.
Good luck and post with any other questions.
Bend saved my life.

No problem at all - I appreciate the response and recommendations! How long would you recommend staying as apart of a 11 night trip?

Me and the wife will be in Portland 5/31, plan on hitting the Saturday Market there and Columbia River Gorge the next day. Then drive up the coast, a little out of the way, up to Seattle. Do the touristy things there for a few days. Next, take the Amtrak into Vancouver for a few days, then starting to make our way across the Rockies with stays in Kamloops and Banff. End up in Calgary to fly home. First time in any of these places and we’re very excited. Hope all goes well for you and your family.

quote:We stayed in a "treehouse" AirBnb in Oceanside over looking the Pacific. Wonderful time. There is also place called Roseanna's Cafe there that sells Homemade pies and Tillamook Ice Cream that is worth the trip. Might as well do Tunnel Beach if your there. The cheese factory, recommended with the kids, is only about 10 miles from there.
One more stop for the kids - the Tillamook Cheese Factory in Tillamook. Best ice cream in the world. Super fresh.
Cape Meares and Ecoli State Park are also a great place to have a picnic.
