Downsize your wallet to a smaller one and keep it in your front pocket or buy a small sling pack. If you’re wearing a backpack get one that has the zipper straps that help prevent theft. A lot of people with phones get cases that have wrist straps on them too.

Now when I travel I wear light weight pants with front pockets that zip (fishing/hiking/outdoor pants) and keep my wallet zipped tight.

I have never been a victim, but I have seen them. Carry your belongings like a running back carries a football.

I was in a small town in rural Romania once and bought a blanket from an old gypsy lady at this big open market.

With the exchange rate, $20-40 US got you a ridiculous roll of Romanian cash and this was back in the prime days of cargo shorts, so the giant pocket held the cash.

So I’m walking around and a few minutes later someone taps me on the shoulder. It was the old lady with a kid who spoke English. He said she wanted me to know I was about to get robbed and should be more careful.

Even old gypsy ladies knew cargo shorts were no good.

Great city. As long as you aren't being an idiot, it's nothing to stress over.

On the other hand, if your fiancee is the type to wear bright pink, keep their sunglasses on their heads like a headband, and/or take pictures in front of everything with their arms in a V shape above their heads with one foot kicked up behind them... well, maybe keep your head on a swivel

I read a guy in Spain had his higher end watch removed from his wrist without even noticing.

Anyone that takes a high end watch on a vacation is an imbecile. It's a neon rob me sign.

What?

I wouldn't consider the watches I have the be high end in the grand scheme of the watch world, but I wear one every day of my life no matter where I am.

Had my wallet picked on a crowded subway in Paris. It was in my front pocket. I am pretty sure it was kids that did it. You think it will never happen to you. You get a weird feeling when you reach for your wallet and its not there.

I’m pretty new to Europe travel but have been lucky enough to spend about 5 weeks over the last 2.5 years. Most of that time was in Rome, Florence, Naples and the Amalfi coast. A couple times local Florentines told me not to hang my purse on the back of a chair or place it beside me in another chair. So I’d put it in my lap or between my feet. Very nice of them since I am pretty relaxed and generally not paranoid about theft. One time in Florence at the duomo at the Santa Maria Novella an old beggar lady got really close to my face showing me pictures and peering at my bag. I ignored and turned away keeping my crossbody away from her. Sadly, I just completely ignore stuff like that because it’s too risky to engage. Someone came up to me a minute later and said she was distracting me and I was about to be pickpocketed by someone else. Didn’t have any problems in Rome or Naples, which is surprising. Your wife should be fine with a crossbody type near her chest. Especially with you present and just be vigilant. My husband was always watching everything and so was my brother in law so that helped a lot. The guys wear nice watches and had no problems. I think their tecova cowboy boots got more attention than their watches. On another trip that was myself and my teenager and mother we were all safe throughout. Lucky, I guess. I’m going back, women only, in November and hoping the luck continues.

The point is that if you show something that can be taken as a sign of wealth you are a target.

Pickpockets are a big problem in Barcelona, especially along the main tourist corridor.

Just be mindful. Wear a money belt if you're worried. You really won't have many problems.

Don't sit outside and put your phone down on the table. Ever.

Shorts or trousers. T shirt or a polo. Why are you trying to overcomplicate this? If you don't think wearing a $10k Rolex on your wrist makes you a potential target then I don't know what to tell you. I have traveled extensively through Italy and Spain and have never had an issue with pickpockets.

Caught pickpocket pulling my wallet out of back pocketWas trying to cross through a line that was boarding a small boat in Colmar, France. He had a partner who wouldn’t let me through(distraction). They ran away when I yelled pickpocket loudly. Lady running boat said police won’t come unless its over 1,000 euros.

My two week Europe trip e´nds tomorrow and we've had no issues. Like others have said, I carrière my wallet in my front pocket and my wife and daughter had cross bodies, kept the purse snuggly in front of them.
