How bad is it getting through this airport? Is it going to be hours getting through customs? Booked a 6 night stay at the La Ramana Hilton All inclusive in Bayahibe for June. Have a ton of Hilton honors points so the lodging is free but flights were a little expensive. Was able to get nonstop flights there and back on United out of IAH.

If anyone has been to this Hilton I would appreciate some feedback!

Hotel is about a 45min trip from airport. So would appreciate any tips on a transport service.

Thanks in advance!

It really just depends on what time of the day you arrive. I think we sat in the customs line about an hour or so during peak time

I am flying in there on a Tuesday the week after next, when I called to make transportation arrangements I was told that at that time of day mid-week it shouldn't take more than 20-30 minutes. Weekends are a different story I was told.

I've been twice and I don't recall it being overly insane.

The baggage claim area can be a shitshow, and they will take your bags right off the belt and want a tip for helping you when you didn't ask for it.

I was there last May and enjoyed my stay. For starters, the resort never seems to get the Sargassum that plagues most of the Caribbean, so the beach was really nice.

I had a great experience with divemaster Berlin in the dive shop. It was my first time diving since getting my Open Water certification six months before, and he was excellent and friendly.

I highly suggest joining the Facebook Fan page for the resort. Any question you have and lots that you don't will get answered in there, as it's a very active group with real fans.

If you have tons of Hilton points, then I assume you have some form of status? La Romana definitely gives Diamonds some real privileges, with a separate lounge, a reserved beach area, and a couple of exclusive restaurants. There aren't a lot of benefits for Golds, though.

EDIT: I flew into SDQ and out of PUJ (it's about 1.5 hours to SDQ and an hour to PUJ), and I spent a night in Santo Domingo before going to the resort, but you'll find lots of transport recs in the Facebook group. I didn't have any airport problems flying out of PUJ.

Great info! Thank you sir!

Yes, I have Diamond status and plan on asking for upgrades at check in.

That may or may not get you a better room, but my point was that Diamond will automatically get you "Premium" status at the resort -- you won't have to ask for it. There's a "premium" pool, a premium lounge with more expensive liquor, a private area of the beach, and private restaurants. People without Hilton Diamond status can pay a significant bit of cash for the upgrade.

Honestly, when I was there last May, the resort wasn't full or crowded, so I didn't really feel a big need for the private pool or beach area, etc. -- but it's a very nice perk. At a lot of hotels, I feel that Hilton Diamond status isn't a big improvement over Gold, but it absolutely is a big deal at La Romana, because Golds don't get any of all that premium stuff.

EDIT: One of the coolest things about my stay there was seeing a manatee in waist-deep water, right out from the beach. I walked out somewhat close to her, but didn't want to disturb her too much. The staff told me that she visits regularly.

Thanks for the info. My wife feels better after I read her your posts.

We stayed at the new Hilton all inclusive Cancun last year but was disappointed. Not with the hotel or services but with the beach/water. Brown water and lots of sargassum.

The water/beach here looks to be great and I’ve also read that sargassum is rare at this beach due to location.
