Rent cars in Denver

I recall many of you saying not to rent a car at DEN because they are cheaper off site. I cannot find those threads, can some of you share your knowledge on the subject? Going mid-May this year.
TIA
TIA

I found one for June at Hertz in Aurora for about 1/2 the price of the ones at the airport. There are lots of options offsite, also check Turo.

I just looked about two weeks ago and found that Avis was cheaper than Turo. Rented from Avis there before. Preferred is free. Walk up and get in the car. They will try to upsell you on the app but usually that car is the only one available. Don’t fall for the upsell
Don’t rent from Thrifty/Budget whatever you do.
Also, Hertz trucks are cheap AF but do charge for mileage. Doesn’t matter when driving not far

I rent regularly from Enterprise in Den. Service is good. I don’t look beyond that.

Denver is the easiest airport to rent a car that I’ve ever used, and I’ve used it over a dozen times. It isn’t any more expensive than any other in my experience

Same here. I just rented a week with National for $325 (Emerald Isle) for a trip in late September

An SUV for four days in July was 440 all-in from Avis

I had a good experience with Kyte in Denver, which drops off/picks up their rental cars. I can't remember but the rate wasn't outrageous.
Given the airport is a haul from some parts, if you're hanging in Denver for a few days and don't need a car before going elsewhere, it's a good option.

I’ve went cheap and used Fox at the airport quite a few times. Never a problem.

In 2021, we had a trip Father's day weekend, Saturday to Monday. Needed a car for basically 48 hrs. Cheapest rental cars ANYWHERE (airport or in town) were about $350.
Went with Turo and got a nice new hatchback Kia Sportage with full navigation system and a sunroof for less than $150.

Less BS airport fees when renting from a home city location vs. airport, which is very understandable. Here's what you need to consider (from a former rental manager):
1. Traveling - how will you get to the home city branch? Pay for Uber/Lyft/Taxi/etc. Added cost right there vs. the airport shuttle to the airport rental site. When we rented (pre-2020) we charged extra to drop off at an airport location when picking up from home city, and vice versa. I don't doubt that those fees still exist.
2. Availability - cars are much easier to come by at airports, so you'll have less options at a home city branch. For me, that doesn't matter, but I know that having options is important to some drivers.
3. Time - home city has different operating hours. Major airports usually run a 24/7 operation. If you happen to have a major delay with your flight, the airport will be more reliable to cater to your travel plans. Hell, you can miss the store hours if you get screwed on a flight delay.
4. Price - put all this together, and weigh whether or not you find the convenience and ease of an airport location to be that much more of a burden financially than logistically solving your travel plans to rent at a home city branch. Depending on your length of travel, it might be just as much to get your way over to a home city branch and rent from there than to rent with the airport.
What you should do
Make a reservation for the following:
1. Pickup/return at airport
2. Pickup at home city (add estimated Uber/Lyft price), drop off at airport (with drop fee)
3. Pickup/return at home city (add Uber/Lyft price for both directions)

About 6 years ago I flew into Denver and found an Enterprise next to a hotel inside Denver. I flew in and taxied to the hotel. Next morning I walked next door to the Enterprise and got the car. Repeated the same process on the way home.
I chose to do this because the car in Denver was cheaper than the airport. No idea if it was even more cheaper outside of Denver. Also, picking the car up the next morning and dropping off the night before we flew out saved me 2 days of rental.
The enterprise worker asked where I was from and I told him Louisiana. I had a reservation for a certain price and he mentioned something about not giving me the airport price like he was supposed to charge me more because I flew into Denver. I thought that was very odd and wondered if that was a thing. Then I thought if he would have done that, I would just say I didn’t fly into Denver. I rode in with a friend and now need a car for myself.

I'm surprised you don't have 10 downvotes already for actually knowing what the hell you're talking about.

There are a ton more fees associated with rental agencies working with airports, so they add up a ton more than your regular branches. It's definitely a thing.

It was a love hate relationship with the job. We did what we were told. It made us money. I made a lot of friends along the way, but I'm glad I am no longer working with the public anymore.

I worked at a rental car counter for a while. I didn't mind the actual renting part, I just hated the pressure I felt from management to sell rental insurance. The airport manager also would get furious if I took a car with a nav from the main rental lot back to the off-airport branch where I worked

100%
I didn't mind it as much. However, I felt that there were serious flaws in the whole "promotability" aspect when all the old heads in the non-rental departments would work the cush positions and NEVER leave them. Selling any type of insurance in South Louisiana is miserable.
Also, cleaning cars in a suit and tie was BS.

It was crazy how badly someone could trash a car in just a few days.
Also, there's no hiding it when someone smokes in a car.
...also, it was crazy how many people use a rental car for their day-to-day living.

People treat other people's stuff like it's not theirs. Sad.
I had a homeless vet live in our rental, almost wreck it on the way out, wrecked it 2 weeks later. Didn't know he was homeless until after we tracked the car down and found out he was at a veteran's shelter. Very sad situation, but I was out on a 2018 Equinox BRAND NEW. Full of his entire life inside that car.
