My wife and I just got back from this trip this week. We went with a tour group, so things were scheduled for us, but our split was 2 nights in Venice, 2 nights in Florence, 3 nights in Rome. We then went to Positano for 2 nights on our own. If I would have changed anything, I would have added an extra night in Florence to explore part of Tuscany. Definitely didn't need any more time in Rome.

Enjoy! Italy is awesome.

I’ve never been to Rome, everyone that says 3/4 days is enough did that give you plenty of time to see the Vatican and all of the museums/ history?

Rome itself doesn’t interest me as a city, but the history and Vatican interest me a ton.

After a certain point, as incredible as all these ancient structures are, you just get numb seeing all of it because everything is ancient over there.

Yes, did a guided tour of the Colosseum and Roman Forum in the morning, then went to St Paul's outside the walls and the catacombs in the afternoon. After dinner, we did a night tour of Rome that included the Spanish steps, Trevi Fountain, and a stop to walk around St. Peter's square. Rome looks its best at night. The next morning we had a tour of the Vatican museums, Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter's Basilica. That afternoon we had free time to do anything else we wanted, so we visited the Pantheon and Piazza Nuvona, then the Basilica of St. Mary Major. It was a busy 2 days, but it can be done if planned correctly.
