I ended up panic-booking bc things were filling up pretty quickly. I settled on two nights at an RV park in Leakey on the Frio and then 3 nights at Pedernales. Ill drive over to Schlitterbahn for a day for the kids.
Thanks for all of the suggestions. Made this a lot easier.

Leakey on the Frio
Frio is great. I grew up going there in the summers. FYI, Leakey is pronounced Lake-ee.

I think some of my grown kids favorite vacation memories are from the Frio. It's just a special place.

Any recommendations there? I was planning on renting some tubes unless its too dangerous for myself, and 8, 11, and 13 year old. Thought we'd go to Garner and wander around a bit.

Do Arkansas instead or up into Missouri. Too many rattlesnakes and heat in July in Texas.

That's about all you do but its awesome. The river is very cold...frio means cold in spanish. My dad used to keep his six packs in the river since it was so cold.... ..but in july its perfect. You can go over to Lost Maples which is kind of cool, take RR 337 for a scenic drive. There is a motorcycle museum near Lost Maples with some old bikes.

Just rent from whatever place is closest to where you're staying. There are different sections of the Frio that you tube. You can start at Neal's or Frio Country or other places. Josh's is a big tube rental place and so if Frio River Outfitters, but I'm sure there are more. Look at Frio River photos. It's gorgeous! Your older kids should be fine but I'd probably throw a life jacket on the younger one. It all depends on how comfortable they are in the water. You need to watch them all closely because it's a real river with rocks and eddies and you can get sucked into them sometimes and get stuck...basically you're tube won't move or you flip when going down the embankment from a crossing and get stuck under the run off. Hard to explain, but sometimes scary to kids. The older ones just need to know if they fall out, just stand up. It's usually shallow. I never thought it was dangerous, but they can get a scraped knee or a bruise or 2 along the way.
Have fun! I'm sort of jealous!

Rent a tube for your ice chest.

I don't camp, but I have seen some campgrounds up on River Road between New Braunfels and Canyon Lake and they are close to Schlitterbahn. River Road is a pretty badass drive.
