The "Omicron" Variant Disrupts Travel Worldwide

If you've been busy eating turkey, watching football, and spending time with your family like a normal person, you may not have heard the huge news that came out of South Africa yesterday.
The South African government says that a variant, which will be Nu since we are using Greek letters, has a number of mutations and is growing explosively though the country.
Already, the UK, Israel, and other countries have banned travel to southern Africa.
It's likely too late, of course, and the variant is going to quickly spread worldwide. In concerning news about it, a Belgian woman tested positive for it who had just returned from a trip to Egypt and Turkey---not southern Africa.
I was supposed to fly on British Airways to JNB the day after Christmas, and that flight is certainly about to be canceled, so I'm about to start on a new plan for travel that week.

To expand on this, the Omicron variant appears to spread so explosively that I think that many governments around the world are going to shut their borders completely, in an attempt to keep this variant out.

Probably based on bad data. It assumes the variant emerged 2/3 weeks ago. I see some argue it's been around 2-3 months.

Yeah, we can hope that the government of South Africa got some stuff wrong. And with only 25% of its population vaccinated, South Africa is still highly vulnerable, and Omicron might be very well blocked by vaccines.
That's the hope. I'm not canceling all my flights and hotels just yet. I booked my BA flights with AA miles, so after BA cancels those flights today, I expect that AA will try to rebook me on Qatar for now, and then I'll have to see if Qatar keeps its flights.

Saw in another thread in here , that they isolated a guy in Hong Kong who had been to Botswana or South Africa , and another guy across the hall in the separate quarantine rooms tested positive as well having no contact with the original man

And they are calling it Omicron because they didn’t want to use the letter ‘Xi’ and offend the Chinese.

There's a difference between severe disease and infections/cases. But this is getting off topic.

In the next frame of that show, the guy who stopped caring finds out that his uncle and great uncle have both died of COVID, like mine did, and that brings him back to reality, unless he's one of the cult crazies like I have in my family who think that no one really dies from COVID and it's all a plot, in which case he's not happy and enjoying life at all, but instead a bitter and hateful person mad at the world for his unhappiness.

There is very much something that people can do. They can get a COVID booster, which makes you about 9 times less likely to get COVID than someone who is unvaccinated.
Since the beginning of COVID, I've been to Argentina, Los Cabos, Istanbul, Sulaymaniyah (Iraq), and Costa Rica. If I'm allowed, I'm going to South Africa next month. I live more comfortably knowing that I've done all I can to protect myself, my family, and my community.
