Alps are absolutely amazing by car and that area is no different. I’ve done most of what can be done in the Bavarian alps and it’s all amazing.

I always highly suggest the ice cave as it’s not on many to do lists. Just a cool unique thing at the top of the mountain by Salzburg, some amazing views up there but there are great views all over.
Ice cave

All of the king Ludwig castles are great. The one on the way to Salzburg from Munich is on an island on a beautiful crystal clear lake.

We took a train from Vienna to Bratislava. The return was by hydroplane on the Danube. Great day trip.

Southern Bavaria and the eastern part of Tyrol has a lot to offer as far as historic and beauty. I vacation in Fieberbrunn in August and have travelled that part of Austria extensively and still have not gotten to everything I want to see.

Tons of great advice in here that I need to respond to, but as a blanket statement to all who have given suggestions: thank you!

Starting with the easiest question to respond to…

quote:

What time in August?

We have to be in Munich the first weekend of August and in Vienna the second weekend of August.

Are you with adults? Kids?

Just myself and my wife.

Might not work out for you then. There is the Bourbon Street Festival in Fieberbrunn August 10th. It is a 1 night festival with bands on the street and beer/food vendors.

No matter where you end up going, look for music night in the village. Almost all villages have a marching or concert band and they will have a concert on a weeknight for the whole summer. Also, plenty of other opportunities for beer drinking.

The month of August is vacation for most Europeans. I have never seen so many "tourists" before last August. I was in Fieberbrunn August 8-18 last year and could not comprehend how many people was in the village. Cyclists and hikers were everywhere. Damn near messed up my vacation.

Salzburg: definitely second augustiner beer garden (heaven is a place on earth)

Based on all the recommendations for Salzburg this will definitely be one of the places we stop - especially for Augustiner.

Finally, if you plan by checking out YouTube, look at the nearfromhome channel. They are munich based and have a ton of pretty good videos on Bavaria and the area around salzburg.

Excellent recommendation - will check them out!

I do think Hallstatt is worth the trip

Definitely going to look into Hallstatt!

This board can be a wealth of knowledge at times. Really appreciate the recommendations.

Rent a car. Berchtesgaden is very cool. You can see the Eagles Nest from the town of you don’t feel like going up and doing the tour.

Drive through the Obersalzberg. Hitlers house, which was bombed by the British is still there. The foundation anyway. There is a famous hotel that’s been there since the 30’s.

Also, there is a salt mine which is awesome. Very nice museum and don’t forget the tunnels the SS built. All very worth the visiting.

Salzburg is nice but wasn’t my favorite.

There is a must see concentration camp east of Salzburg. Mauthausen. A must see.

The train is very easy. Perhaps consider a few days in Innsbruck and the mountains as a stopover. It's about two hours from Munchen to Innsbruck.
