Get tickets ahead of time if you plan to go on the Sunday after the game. Weekdays aren't as busy.
Also, Walking after dark isn't that dangerous if you're in a group.
Couples and people walking alone are a different story. Just like in any big city.

I agree the Quarter isn’t that bad if you know where to go.

FQF is a good festival to sample a lot of different foods down in quarter

It isn't. However, I will say that it isn't as good as it used to be. The French Quarter, even parts of Bourbon, has (or had) charm and some appeal. I used to love going into the art galleries and antique stores in the Quarter, or heading over to the shops by the French Market. The area is pretty dicey now. The lower garden district and uptown has some good areas. That's where I'd focus the majority of my trip.
