George R.R. Martin down to his last 500 pages on Winds of Winter

Stole this from the Movie/TV Board

By now, fans of George R.R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire books — the novels adapted into the HBO Max series Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon — are used to mildly exhausting updates on his progress on the 11-years-overdue next novel in the series, The Winds of Winter. An episode of the Comedy Central series Stephen Colbert’s Tooning Out The News has the latest from Martin, who says — sounding fairly sincere about it — that he’s written around 1,100 to 1,200 pages of the book so far, and just has “another 400, 500 pages” to go.
Martin has frequently expressed that he’s exasperated with fans and interviewers constantly nagging him about his slow progress on The Winds of Winter, which keeps getting sidelined as he works on other HBO shows and projects. But here, he seems to at least try to force a sense of humor about the whole thing, with some awkward laughs at the roasting. What he doesn’t address is why he doesn’t, as Patterson blithely suggests, separate Winds of Winter into releasable sections, given that a 1,700-page book isn’t really a physical possibility. “Problem solved!” Patterson says. “You break down the 1,100 pages into three books… You submit one book per year, they’ll be happy, and suddenly you’ll be ahead of schedule!” Martin just laughs.

My money is that he is actually working on the LAST book, so both can be released after he dies. That way he won’t:
1. Hear nonstop “when is the last book coming out??”
2. Face criticism for story-arc decisions.
These are the only logical conclusions, other than distractions and laziness, that make sense.

Martin is a lying sack of shite. At this rate as close as he has been to being done the book is going to be 100K pages easily if his promises keep hold.
Could see a world record on our hands here, seriously screw that bastard
Edit: having said that if he puts the book out I will read just because I secretly hold out hope he will finish it. Even if his end game is the same as the show I am sure he will do a better job than those two idiots on HBO

Once you exclude the obvious, simplest, and heavily supported by all available evidence explanation, it's the only logical explanation.

He's written 1,100 pages in 11 years so about 5 more years.

Only 7 more years to go then

He MAY release the next book, I have my doubts.
But I guarantee he won’t release the last book. I bet he’ll put together some “historic telling” of the end like his Targ book with instructions to release it when he dies.
That lets the lazy fat man avoid the work of actually writing the ending and resolving all the loose ends from the dozens of storylines he has going.

I would be ok with leaving notes for someone else to finish it….assuming the candidate is the real deal (preferably Abercrombie)

He's expressly drafted legal documents to make sure this does not happen. If he dies, the story dies with him.

Then George is a bigger a-hole than I ever imagined. Guy does not deserve fans the way he treats them

Hopefully he does a much better job than the arse clowns at HBO. But it’ll probably be a letdown.

The arse clowns did what GRRM could not, get Dany out of Meereen, and Bran will still be king at the end.

The truth is he has no idea how to wrap this thing up.
His hooks an all about gritty realism in a fantasy setting but reality doesn’t have a conclusive ending. It just goes on indefinitely.

He should be denied food until he finishes. Fatty would get busy then

He was cruising along just fine, and then you assholes hated his “You want a good girl but you need the bad pussy.” Line and he basically threw it all in the trash.

Wait, what. That was one of the best scenes of the entire series
