Has anyone read the new Christopher Paolini book? I liked his Eragon series. Just wondering if this compares or is as good?

I’m about half way through and I’m really enjoying it.
I’ve never read his other books but this is good science fiction. In some ways it’s got elements of Alien, The Expanse and Halo.

Just finished today. It was pretty good but like I said in another thread. Its very over the top to me and hard to even imagine some of it because of how far fetched it is.

Wasn’t this one of the main criticisms of Eragon?

Gotta give the guy credit, he's managed to make a nice career for himself mimicking other people's works. The throwing in the young age angle was a nice way to shield himself from criticism as well back in the day.

I didn't even think of the expanse much when I read it but now that I've read your comment again it seems almost stolen from the expanse but not nearly as well done.

Spoiler
The first thing o thought of when the Soft Blade appeared was the protomolecule from the expanse.
And the Jellies reminded me of the squid alien things from Halo. And speaking of Halo, the nightmares made me immediately think of the Flood.

Yeah just finished it a few days ago. It started of really good. And it wasn’t terrible but as it went on it got harder and harder to buy what was happening.
But it was something to read while waiting for the final Expanse book

From what I remember there were a lot of complaints for it ripping off themes from Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, etc.

A Christopher Paolini book probably has a lot more than just elements.

I am loving this book. Only 200 pages in right now but it’s great. I’ll update with spoilers when I finish.
I love fantasy sci/fi.

It’s a dumb criticism.
All writers borrow from other writers.
As do musicians.
You take what influences you and make it your own.
No one criticized Tolkien for mimicking Beowulf and Christianity

Heh, there are no original themes in Star Wars. George Lucas was heavily influenced by Joseph Campbell who wrote The Power of Myth, among other things related to mythology. The Star Wars themes are all classics.

SPOILER:
I was really enjoying this book.
I just got to the middle of the book where the twist is that her part of the suit that blew out the EC is what caused the “Nightmares” and now they have an envoy and communication with “the jellies”. I kind of hate it now. I hated this whole last chapter where she plays a card game and can’t figure out how to count to seven (she’s an interstellar scientist and he’s a hyperspace ship captain and there’s multiple paragraphs dedicated to how hard it is for both of them to count to seven). And she’s whining and crying about how it’s her fault all of this happened and she just can’t live with the thought that because some piece of her suit flew out an airlock etc etc.
I hope this thing turns around. But all of the characters just suddenly shifted in personality and tone. It’s like he forgot how to write for them or took a break and came back to the story in a different mindset or something.

I think in the acknowledgements he admits that he had to go back over the storyline multiple times because the first draft didn't feel right.
The insertion of the nightmares - something he says didn't exist in the first draft - is where I kind of lost interest but begrudgingly pushed to the finish.
I didn't mind that elements of the book are very similar to other science fiction stories, but it just felt rushed and disconnected at the end. There was too much flying and he clearly didn't know how to land it all properly.

I’m just tired of Kira’s constant whining. I have no idea why he wrote so much whining into this book. It just gets old after a while. Every other page she’s crying and whining about something. I’ll finish the book, but I’m really starting to hate it.
It’s a bummer because there are some really cool concepts and there is great story material. He just didn’t execute it properly in my opinion.
Maybe lll write a fanfiction spinoff about the Waranu and the rise of their great and powerful leader.
