I want to get my dad a WWII book for Christmas. He is an avid reader and massive history buff. Can anyone recommend a book about WWII? Something niche and specific? He has in depth knowledge about WWII, so I would like a suggestion about something that maybe you wouldn’t learn about in a history course. Maybe something about OSS ops in occupied France or something specific like that?

Has he read the first hand accounts of Helmet For My Pillow and With The Old Breed? Both of those are great.

SOE / OSS books that I've thoroughly enjoyed:

-The Winter Fortress; group of Norwegians ruin Hitler's attempt at an Atomic bomb. My personal favorite.

- Scholars of Mayhem ; Follows a group that leads a guerilla (French?) resistance.

- We Die Alone ; Craziest survival story I've ever read. Once again located in Norway.

Ben MacIntyre is a fantastic author.
Really enjoyed his books on Kim Philby and Oleg Gordievsky. More Cold War than WWII though.

The Battle of Arnhem by Antony Beevor. It’s about Operation Market Garden in Holland, mid-September 1944. It is a pretty well known saga of WW2 and has been the subject of other books and a movie (A Bridge Too Far.) However, Beevor’s book is very well written and uses some new or forgotten sources. Good read for a person interested in a specific WW2 action.

Look for Rick Atkinson series, three books I think. I have not read it but I did read his two on the Gulf war. Excellent military historical writer and easy to follow.

Not sure how niche it may be, but I really enjoyed Ghost Soldiers by Hampton Sides. It's about the Bataan Death March, and the mission to free the American POW's there.
