I’d want Freeman as well.

But I’m not going to freak out about Mason.

I think mason would be fine. Everyone keeps saying we need a young guy with something to prove....I’d be willing to bet mason feels like he has something to prove and he’s not that old lol. Also people keep saying offense has changed so much since he was a dc, that’s true but he’s been seeing it first hand. It’s not like he’s been in a cave and doesn’t know what’s going on.
Lastly if we do hire mason at least Ryan Clark won’t be to upset

The question is: how much of the Vandy defense was talent and how much Mason?

I don’t hate the idea but would probably prefer someone coaching a defense directly.

If you want a better look at Mason scheme look at his time at Stanford where he was DC. Also for at least 2 yrs maybe 3 Mason called the defensive signals at Vandy as HC.

Wiki is awesome. Dont take this as an endorsement, just info sharing.

This is the equivalent of hiring Pete Carmichael and thinking you’re getting Sean Payton’s offensive production. Freeman may well be a good coach, but you never know how much input a defensive coach HC has into playcalling and scheme.

Vandy is on its 3rd AD in less than 2 years, and I think the one that hired Mason is not the 3rd. Vandy only spends 22 million on football. Now stop and think about that, the average Bowl revenue is $8 million per SEC team. The other 13 SEC Presidents and AD's need to sit down and tell the Vandy Admin to invest more money that the other SEC football programs are creating into your own program.

The fact that he made it there 7 years is an accomplishment.

And when was the last time Raymond was a DC? Lol

(By the way, I looked it up and Raymond last called defenses at the high school level a whole decade earlier than the last time Mason was a P5 DC)

You shouldn’t melt because we don’t even know how interested LSU is in him. All the report says is they contacted him and the probably did. For all we know that’s all they did and they aren’t interested and Mason’s agent leaked the information to let other schools know LSU is interested.

he hasn’t coached a D in forever.

He's 51 and been coaching since his mid twenties. He coached for nearly 20 years with the bulk of it defense at the Pro and College level. If seven years ago is "forever", you very likely are not in your 40s.

His defenses prior to 2017 were pretty damn good considering it was Vanderbilt. His defenses at Stanford were also famous for shutting down Oregon's vaunted offense.

The past 3 seasons, however, they've been abysmal.

Curious what happened.

im in mid 30s.

plus with how the offensive have evolved since say 2016 its pretty unwise to go with a guy that last ran a successful D in 2012-13.

Mason might work out fine, but going with he was great at Stanford before the offense revolution of college football we are currently in doesn't mean he will be good again. Bo had us as a top 5 D most of his time in BR for the first stint. He came back and the game and offenses clearly passed him by

Eventually LSU fans will catch on that you aren’t getting the old shut out defenses ever again and they

Get some turnovers, disrupt the QB, get 5/6 punts a game, don’t blow coverages & call it a day

Isn’t it a popular saying that defense in college is more Jimmies and Joe’s as opposed to X's and O’s. Let’s be honest, Vandy isn’t ever going to recruit defensive talent comparable to LSU. I wouldn’t hate the hire

James Franklin was 24-15 at Vandy, and 9-4 his last year with hard playing defenses

Mason took over a good program with a .615 win pct and turned it into a team with a .329 win pct and horrific defenses

He is awful. No other way to spin it

im not expecting shutouts every game, that era is way gone.

which is fine, if we can get turnovers and stops and not have blown coverage then that is a win.

I do worry if it is mason we are moving into a issue les had which is we recruited for a 4-3 base, so either mason has to move to a 4-3 or we try to jam 4-3 players into a 3-4

His defenses got much worse once the SEC started running spread offenses...
