Shannon B. Terry just tweeted that sources say Napier turned down the job and that Bill Clark is next in line.

He was never offered the SC job though. They went straight to Beamer. Yes our AD pissed Napier off because we decided to not fire our coach after we started talking to him but I blame our AD not Napier

A common problem with big programs

I don’t even know what booster control over a program is? I mean seriously I find it really hard to believe boosters are sitting in these interviews and demanding a coach do this or that. Seems like message board stuff thrown against the wall

I heard it from a coach in Billy’s circle.

These dudes are throwing millions of dollars into the program.
They may not be in the room interviewing dudes, but they sure as hell want to be consulted when they are the ones that footed the bill to get the last guy out of town so I wouldn’t be surprised if they were listening with their ear on the door for those interviews at least

Pretty sure Napier would try to bring Patrick Toney in as his DC if he gets the job
He would take Ron Roberts from Baylor.

I think at some big money programs the biggest donors are allowed more influence, or have to at least be politicked with, more than some coaches are willing to do.
This is why a Nick Saban at Texas would never happen. They have huge boosters who expect the HC to kiss their rings and make them feel like they are almost part of the decision making for team decisions.
If Napier is the “Saban disciple” that seems to be talked about, then he’s learned from the best to stay away from those situations. Dabo Sweeney seems to be another example of that.
Someone like Mac Brown was a good fit at Texas because he was just as good a politician as a football coach. If Auburn is going to allow their biggest donors to have football operations influence, then they need to be searching for a Mac Brown/Joe Pa type coach.

Something must be up with Napier. This is too weird.

waiting on Saban to announce his retirement this spring
Posted on 12/21/20 at 12:12 pm to GetCocky11
He’s looking for that perfect spot, he better be careful tho, plenty of coaches have missed their window of opportunity and never got that big chance because of it
