What’s the blueprint? Other than being successful sitting head coaches, Sumrall and Fritz have nothing in common. And Napier doesn’t fit that bill. He’s not a sitting head coach. Just got fired actually. So not that successful either.
Good grief, I spelt it out in my post. You know, the part you didn’t quote.
Read slowly since you missed it last time: someone with head coaching experience at the G5 level, who’s experienced success at what Tulane considers a lower tiered program (ie: Georgia Southern and Troy). Tulane has gone the coordinator route and it was a disaster. Tulane views itself as an upper echelon G5 program that should compete for a conference championships with a shot at the playoffs in certain years. They do not view themselves as a program that provides “on the job training” to be a head coach and are comfortable as a head coaching stepping stone: it means their program is experiencing success

How would feel about Napier since you are a Tulane fan?
I think he could do well there.

Did you miss the sentence above this one you copied.
We are in a better position now that we don’t need to hire someone with no head coaching experience. We did that with Curtis Johnson, it failed.
Blake should stay at LSU and build his resume by making their defense even better.

If I had to pick between the two I would rather Napier.
I would like him to get an OC that would call the plays because I heard that that was a big problem for him at Florida.
If Napier kept Will Hall as OC I think it would be a good fit.

I think Tulane is prepared to be replacing him in 2-3 years. They knew that would be the case with Sumrall
I remember when Tulane hired him I told my coworker that if Sumrall was here after 3 years things went badly for both parties.

Been on the road all day, here’s an update from source
Interview went well, wasn’t a “we can’t let him leave the room” well, but the Wave really like him. AD & shot callers reticent to hire a first time head coach. Apparently players hyped at the prospect.
Prediction: he goes back to LSU with a raise.

Who do you think the favorite is?
Posted on 12/1/25 at 6:39 pm to 1999
Hard to say. Tulane keeps stuff really close to the vest.
As it stands I would say:
Baker, Neal Brown, Shannon Dawson.
Edit: expect a hire by the end of the week. AD has known Sumrall has been leaving for weeks after a discussion and has been proactive in the search.

I believe north Texas is hiring him.

I'm sure the checkbook is ready.

Since 1995 Tulane has hired
Bowden - Coordinator
Scelfo - OL Coach, never a coordinator anywhere
Toledo - A coordinator at the time but with HC experience
CJ - WR Coach. Never a coordinator at any level
Fritz - Longtime HC
Sumrall - HC experience
The only “learning on the job” coordinator was arguably the best coach they’ve had.
The last HC hire for Ohio State, Oregon and UGA all coordinators with 0 HC experience

Baker and Dawson are the only 2 names on that list that don't make me nauseous. .

If he stays and wins a Natty he will have plenty of p4 offers

I think Napier could work out.
Slade Nagle is one of the hires that would cause me to cancel my season tickets.

Would take him over Slade.

Florida has excellent resource for SEC and he couldn’t win there. Mullen won – not enough I guess, but he won. Napier lost at Florida. At ULL, won a lot of close games; only 1 big win and that was the first game in the pandemic season. No thanks.
