Both kind of blah

Just like last year. I heard the names, tried to be positive about it, but was skeptical and very underwhelmed. Unfortunately, I was right to be skeptical.

I do not want Mason. I do not want Harrell. Honestly, I don't want anyone who has ever had ties to USC just so we can be sure that this hire was based on merit and not because of a half-assed search that ended with us hiring another of his buddies.

I firmly believe that Freeman is the clear-cut best candidate for the DC job. That doesn't mean that we can just go get him, he has to want to come here, but I think you make him say no at least twice. Admittedly, I have not done as much digging on the OC side, so I'm not sure who the best candidate would be, but I know enough about Harrell to know that he isn't it.

I would go after Rob Sale before Harrell. Not saying that he is the best candidate, but he is certainly a better one and has LSU ties. I'm more interested in the Louisiana Fence than I am the USC Pipeline.

very disappointed. when has Mason done anything? He doesn't even have much experience on defense. he shouldn't even be considered nor Harrell. If O is stupid enough to hire them, he deserves what's coming. We need great coordinators, not mediocre at best.

You clearly have no idea what you're talking about and neither does half of this site when it comes to potential coaching hires.

quote:

After his playing career ended, Mason coached college football at Mesa Community College, Weber State, Bucknell, Utah, St. Mary's, New Mexico State, and Ohio. From 2007 to 2009, he coached defensive backs for the Minnesota Vikings of the NFL under Brad Childress, who had been one of his coaches at Northern Arizona.

StanfordEdit

In 2010, Mason was hired as defensive backs coach on Jim Harbaugh's staff at Stanford. In 2011, Mason was promoted to associate head coach and co-defensive coordinator under new head coach David Shaw.[1] In 2012, Mason became the sole defensive coordinator for the Cardinal and was a finalist for the Broyles Award, given annually to the top assistant coach in college football.[1] In 2013, the defensive coordinator position was endowed and named the Willie Shaw Director of Defense.[1]

His defenses were usually solid at Vandy considering he was coaching at fricking Vandy. It's near impossible to maintain any sort of success at that school compared to other SEC schools.

The perfect one-year interim coordinators to place-hold until O and the whole staff get fired one year from now.

I think Harrell’s offense would go over a bit like his mentor’s did at miss state. Which is piss poor aside from curb stomping our D the first game. IMO not a good hire, but it’s O’s neck on the line. Not mine.

I will say that Mason that at the very least has the fire to field a great defense. If he can or not, who knows, but I think he’d have his defense pumped and ready for war every Saturday.

Maybe freeman told them no.

If not, this is a horrible decision.
Still think I'd go with a younger dc. Mason wouldn't be in my top 3

Graham harrell doesn't impress me

Would rather Harrell and Freeman but mason would probably do a good job as well.

Frustrated more than anything. One thing you can count on O to do is frick up hiring coordinators. What they need on both sides of the ball is continuity scheme wise with a little more flexibility and creativity added in. Harrell would overhaul our O. Keep Calloway as OC and bring back Munoz as PGC to move more back to the RPO spread mix that Brady have us last year. On D wanna stay with a 4 man front with flexibility, Freeman brings that. Mason is a 2 gap guy who would offset everything we’ve spent the last year doing recruiting and personell wise. Why hire a man expensive guy at OC and lame arse retread like Mason at DC when you could go cheap and get Calloway/Munoz and spend big bucks on Freeman?!?!

This has been my exact argument all along. Not to mention Ensminger will still be on staff as a mentor in the offensive side of the ball. He will help bring continuity to the offense and the new coach’s.

This lie keeps spreading over and over again.

In 5 of his 7 seasons his defense was ranked 12th overal total defense in SEC

It would reconfirm my perspective that O is an idiot when it comes to actual Xs and Os of for all outside of DLine.

Both have serious flaws in their records and in areas that are key needs in these hires.

I won’t be surprised though, because so has failed on basically every hire outside of Brady anyhow, so would be par for the course.

Do you know where you posted this question? Nobody will be happy, no matter who the hires are.
