I sit by the fireplace and read LOTR every winter when the weather goes to shite. It's my own weird tradition.
I've always been intimidated to try The Silmarillion, but decided to give it a go. I now recommend any LOTR fan give it a try, just keep Google near to keep track of the crazy amount of characters.

I’ve read it 3 times. I need to read it again. Cause I always feel like I forget so much of the info and stories. It makes LotR so much more awesome.
I also have a few books from the History of Middle Earth box set that I’ve yet to read. If you really want to dive deep into Tolkien’s mind, give those a go.

I start The Fellowship every October and read through RotK.

It is definitely one that you read and get overwhelmed. The second read through, you anticipate it. The story becomes easier to follow. The 3rd time through is a breeze.
I think the hardest part of the first read through is that you do not get ANY of the Middle Earth known Characters until the very end. It's a History/Mythology chronology more than anything. However, it really enhanced my enjoyment of LOTR series knowing the history of Middle Earth.

The exact same for me. The 1st time I tried reading it I was like 20 and I only made it halfway through. The Hobbit/LOTR was my favorite fantasy series ever so I was like I have to give this another go. Probably around 25 I read it again and absolutely loved it. So beautiful.
Since the LOTR movies came out, people that didnt read the Silmarillion always wanted a movie. I've always hoped there wasnt a show or movie. It would almost be impossible to do this justice and just too hard to interpret to film.

I am 49 years old and have read LOTR every year since I was 22. I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who does this.
I also have enjoyed reading the Silmarillion, but I have only read it a couple of times.

It’s so good. Took me several tries to finally get through it, but damn glad I did.

I did that for maybe 6-7 years but i've been reading a decent amount more fantasy series that take up a lot of reading time so I havent read it in 3-4 years. Hopefully will read it again this year. The series of Silmarillion/LOTR/Hobbit are still my favorite books of all time though.

Yea I know. I would just prefer for them not to have done it
They've shown they can screw up fantasy with WoT. I can definitely see them screwing this up since it will be even harder to adapt. I'll definitely give it shot and hope they knock it out the park, but im not going to get his hopes up.

So, I know I can Google this, but what is it about in your own words?
(I'm currently reading Wheel of Time and really enjoying it)

The silmarillion essentially covers the history of middle earth and the planet on which it resides from the creation of the world and beings through the 3rd age (the age in which the lord of the rings takes place)
You'll find our about
-who made the rings
-where aragons ancestors and the creators of Minas tirith/gondor/arnor were from
-the palantir stones
-the undying lands frodo, bilbo, etc sail to.
-why there's a spider called shelob in mordor
-who made Sauron the evil being he is
Etc.

If you've read LOTR, its a must read. If you wanted to tackle it, read Silmarillion, Hobbit and LOTR in chronological order.
LOTR is my favorite fantasy series of all time, and I struggled through The Silmarillion the 1st go round. Actually gave up about 1/3 of the way in. You have to get through a decent portion of it until it really picks up. The 1st part reads a good bit like the Bible. But it is some seriously beautiful writing.

Not exactly. Based on it, sure. But I definitely don’t live there.
