New Years Weekend Travel Issues

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a happy new year. Been looking at flight cancellations and there are again over 1,000 cancellations today
. Big snowstorm in Chicago is wreaking havoc and with the earlier cancellations this week it's causing an absolute mess. Jetblue has cancelled thousands of flights through the end of january due to a lack of flight crews, curious if other airlines follow. If anyone needs help rebooking from a cancelled flight, post here and we can try to help.

Guess the lesson is to not travel near major holidays anymore

Wuhan looks to be pretty efficient. Bet those Chinese airports cook the numbers on cancellations about like Covid cases.

My RTB-IAH flight on United was horribly delayed, but I was able to switch and get on the earlier flight (which was only delayed an hour) and I am about to get on my connecting flight to MSY, which is somehow on time.
I feel lucky.

It's beginning to look that way but seems like Southwest and American found a decent solution. Both of those airlines had their issues earlier in the fall so they reduced flight schedules for christmas and new years knowing they wouldn't be able to handle that operation. Alaska, Delta, and Skywest didn't have any fall issues so it makes sense they are experiencing it now. Hoping they learn their lesson to publish a flight schedule they can actually operate.

Weird that united had two flights within twenty minutes of one another going to IAH today. Glad you were able to get on the other flight and not deal with the nearly 3 hour delay on your original RTB-IAH. I'm also looking and the earlier IAH-MSY is delayed 3.5 hours, glad you'll get home tonight

It's a weird schedule for sure. I don't get why United would have two flights leaving Roatan for IAH 20 minutes apart, as they didn't have enough passengers to fill one flight. Unfortunately, the United gate agents in RTB did a poor job of getting people from the crazy-delayed flight onto the other one. We made it, but some 15 people did not. Even though there were more empty seats than that, I think United knew that every minute that the plane was on the ground, people were missing connections, and the ground crew just couldn't get people switched very efficiently. We only made it onto the earlier flight because we did not check any bags.

This is key if you want any flexibility at switching flights or giving up your seat on an overbooked flight. United and American will not switch you to other flights with checked luggage because it's a pain in the arse for them, especially on international flights. I think delta and southwest will but may need others to confirm here.

Thanks for what you do on this board Cuse.
Do you think things will be back to normal by this weekend/next week?

What guidance would you give regarding booking summer travel now? Specifically ATL to Denver, Seattle and Kalispell?

If everyone is sick now and the weather improves across the country, I can see it getting better especially with less people traveling. I've got flights Thursday and Sunday so hoping for the best

Are you planning on multiple one way tickets? If you see a price you like then book it. I know there's direct Seattle to Kalispell flights on Alaska that probably are $$$ during peak summer

Yes, three separate trips from ATL. Most likely on Delta due to having points for the Seattle trip and SW for Denver.

Any issues with your flights Cuse? Just wondering if all the flight issues have been resolved for the most part. Have flights this weekend.

No issues on my end but I do still see Southwest cancelled over 200 flights today, United 180, Alaska 110, and more. So there is a chance but weather looks decent across the country this week which should help
