My trip to the Azteca

Overall an incredible experience that I’ll never forget. Maybe it was different in the past, but all of the fans there were amazing and treated us well throughout the city during the whole trip. I wore my Waldo kit around the city on Thursday and didn’t have a single bad experience.
My friend and I wandered the tailgating area before the game and had a great time drinking and eating with the locals.
As you’d imagine, the security to get in was insane. We went in the main entrance on our own (didn’t meet up with the away supporters until later). They confiscated pretty much everything but the clothes on your back (belts, scarves, etc.) and we were frisked multiple times at different areas. Our tickets weren’t technically in the away section since tickets were given in a lottery but we’d heard word that they would let any US supporters in the cage so we tried to go there first. We weren’t even there yet when a cop came up to us and escorted us to the ramp for the US section. It was being blocked by probably 100+ policia with riot shields as they brought us up the ramp. Since capacity was limited we were pretty much the only people in the upper deck.
The game itself was a blast. Obviously wish we would’ve put one of those away but the supporters were on another level anyway. Impressive turnout in terms of numbers, definitely the most we’ve ever had at Azteca despite the capacity limitations.
After the game they kept all of us in the upper level until 45 minutes after the game ended to let the stadium clear out. We were all escorted out by another large group of cops who were loving it. They were giving everyone high fives on the way down and thanking us for coming.
Overall a 10/10 experience and everyone should try to go if you get the chance (unfortunately is going to be awhile now). The size of the stadium is incredible and I wish I could’ve seen it rocking at full capacity.

Where did y’all stay during the trip? How did you get tickets?

This was by far the most “relaxed” atmosphere I’ve ever seen at Azteca.
Do you think with the restrictions and especially after the fan attacks a few weeks ago, the Mexican FA was vetting the Mexican attendees to make sure no known hooligans had access to tickets?

Weren’t some of the fans protesting Mexican soccer because how they handled the riot and aftermath?

Congrats on the huge cock and balls, mate

This is awesome. Thanks for sharing.
ETA: funny that you had a better experience as a USMNT fan in Mexico City than I did at the Rose Bowl at the gold cup in 2011, where we got harassed and threatened by Mexican american L Tri fans and some peuple went to the hospital after being hit by glass bottles.

We stayed at an Air BnB in La Condesa. There, Roma Norte, and Polanco were beautiful and extremely safe. Most US fans I talked to were somewhere around those 3 neighborhoods including the AO hotel, team hotel, etc.
Tickets were different this year because of the restrictions. FMF limited the number of tickets given to US soccer (from my understanding that’s not usually the case). The last few weeks have been a shite show. No tickets or info had been released as recently as 2 weeks ago. USSF finally announced that they would hold a weighted lottery, first for insiders, then supporters groups, then others. We didn’t get tix through the lottery and thought we were fricked . FMF hadn’t released tickets to the public yet so we checked religiously until those dropped last week on Ticketmaster and bought some elsewhere in the stadium.

Wouldn’t surprise me. Every fan with a ticket he to register through FIFA’s new ‘FanID’ before getting to the stadium. Basically had to verify your ticket, give personal info, upload a picture of an ID, and a selfie then it sent you a QR code. At the gate everyone had to scan the QR code along with the ticket.
I honestly think the biggest reason for the more “relaxed” atmosphere was the ticket prices. I’m pretty sure they were significantly more expensive than they normally are. No idea if that was FMF’s choice to keep out lower class or simply supply and demand with lower capacity.

I’m sure some were, but they sold out the allowed capacity so that wasn’t the reason for the smaller crowd

Mate did you need proof of vaxcinatoon to travel to Mexico or at any part of your stay while in Mexico?

The crowd at that and the 2019 Gold Cup final at Soldier Field are two of the biggest shames in US soccer history.

Awesome to hear this. I've been to Azteca, but not for a USA game. I was just visiting a friend in Mexico and we went to a Club America game. The away crowd was surrounded by riot police, and there were riot police in front of what I assume were the "ultras." That, combined with the stories of how the USMNT and supporters have been treated in the past made me hesitant to travel for a USA game, but I'm glad to hear you had a great experience.
